In Phoenix, Ariz., a knife-wielding carjacker was fatally shot while attempting to rob a 19-year-old man at a gas station. The man was seated in his car by the fuel pump with his door open. A woman allegedly approached the driver to distract him as the carjacker snuck up behind the vehicle owner with a knife and demanded his car. The vehicle owner pulled out his handgun and fired several shots, striking the carjacker. The carjacker died of his injuries at the scene. The vehicle owner called police immediately to report what happened and waited for officers to arrive. The woman with the carjacker allegedly fled the scene. However, police reportedly found her hiding in an area residence and arrested her. She was booked in jail on two felony counts, including armed robbery. (azcentral.com, Phoenix, Ariz., 7/18/19)

An armed assailant brought an ax to a gun fight in North Carolina early one Saturday morning. According to High Point police, they responded to the house the previous (Friday) evening, to a report of an assault in which a man had grabbed, choked and pushed a woman. By the time police obtained a search warrant (though they had stationed a tactical team outside in the meantime), they discovered the man had left the scene. Unfortunately, he came back a mere hour and a half later to assault the woman with an ax, forcing the woman to grab a gun and take his life. (Charlotte Observer, High Point, N.C., 8/2/19)
