A convicted felon was fatally shot after a homeowner and his wife defended themselves during a violent home invasion. The convict and a second intruder initially broke in while only the wife was home, striking her in the face. When her husband arrived home he entered through the kitchen, where he was met with the full force of a blunt object to his head. He was then ordered to open his gun safe, and watch as the robbers helped themselves to three long guns and a pistol before leaving. Meanwhile, the wife had been able to flee to a neighbor’s house. Unsure of her whereabouts, the husband retrieved another pistol before heading out to look for her, when he again encountered the assailants. An altercation ensued and the newly-armed homeowner opened fire on the two thugs. It was determined that the fatally wounded man had a long record with multiple felony convictions, and was also wanted on two probation violation warrants. The second intruder remained at large. (The Tennessean, Nashville, TN, 3/29/18)

Dale Leonard, 17, working in a Dayton, Ohio, pharmacy storeroom, saw two gunmen force his boss to lie on the floor while they rifled the register. By prearranged signal, Leonard alerted the co-owner, Mrs. Pauline Gleadell, in her apartment at the rear. As the robbers emerged from the store, Mrs. Gleadell met them with her shotgun, wounded one, and held the other at bay until the police arrived. (UPI, Dayton, OH)
