With the runaway success of 14" barrel non-NFA pump-action 12-ga. firearms last year, including the Mossberg Shockwave and Remington 870 Tac-14, it's not surprising that companies are looking to grab as much of the market share for themselves as they can. Charles Daly has already announced the Honcho line, which will include .410-bore, 20-ga. and 12-ga. options with polymer furniture while Mossberg and Remington will be adding new calibers, finishes and removable box magazine models.

But hiding in plain sight over at the MKS Supply booth was a 14" barrel Ithaca Model 37 Defense pump-action prototype. I got to hold it, but the staff members would not (or could not) tell me much about it. Ithaca is sticking to the classically styled hardwood fixtures for their 14" pump gun, including the grooved pump handle and a pistol grip with a wedge shaped grip that gives the visual impression of a shorten shoulder stock. With the exception of the grip and the barrel length, this yet to be named or priced scatter gun has the same features as the standard Model 37 defensive models including carbon steel construction, a matte black finish and brass bead front sight.
