Jim Tipton, owner of the 96 Truck Stop, was armed when two men suspected in the robbery and abduction of a taxi driver attempted to rob his store. The two suspects went behind the counter while pointing a firearm at an employee and demanded money. Tipton fired three times. One suspect was held for police while the other was discovered wounded a short time later in a nearby field. The condition of the wounded suspect was not released. No other injuries were reported. Three burglars got more than they bargained for when they returned to the same rural Alabama neighborhood two days later for another round of thievery. The Wyatt family’s home had been burglarized earlier in the week, with two televisions and several of their child’s Christmas presents having been taken. Police were in the area investigating a second burglary in the same area when the Wyatts called up and informed the authorities that they had encountered the culprits, apprehended them and were currently holding them at gunpoint. Deputies then arrived and took two women and a man into custody, and charged them all with third degree burglary and second degree theft of property. A search of the suspects’ vehicle revealed items that had been stolen from the second home. (WBRC, Birmingham, AL, 12/20/14)

November 1974
Fortunately for Reuben Flotz, he could see his home near Howe, Ind., while fishing in the Pigeon River. He watched as a stranger drove up, knocked without getting an answer and then entered by slitting a screen door. Flotz hurried over through a back door. He grabbed his rifle and covered the thief, who was about to steal a radio, binoculars and other valuables. Then he tried to phone the police but the phone did not work, so Flotz marched the intruder 200 yds. at gunpoint to a neighbor’s house. (The Goshen News, Goshen, IN)
