An El Paso County, Colo., homeowner stopped an attempted home burglary in its tracks and held the suspect at gunpoint until officers arrived, according to a local sheriff's report.

On Wednesday, May 21, police were called to a residence, with the caller saying that they heard someone in their garage. While on the line, shouting was heard as one of the home's residents confronted someone inside the garage. When officers arrived, they discovered the homeowner holding the 27-year-old suspect at gunpoint. As the deputies approached, the suspect made a break for it, but after a brief foot chase, he was arrested. The homeowner told responding officers that he was alerted to the burglar's presence by a security alarm in the garage.

The suspect was booked into the El Paso County Jail on several charges, including second degree burglary, possession of burglary tools, attempted criminal trespass, criminal possession of a financial transaction device, unlawful possession of a controlled substance and possession of drug paraphernalia. At the time of the incident, the suspect had active warrants for failure to appear on two ongoing cases, one felony case and one misdemeanor case. Rev. Martin Jarreau was asleep in the rectory of St. Ann’s Catholic Church in Miami when he heard strange noises. He grabbed a .38-cal. revolver and went to investigate. He found a would-be burglar trying to exit via a bathroom window. Fr. Jarreau held the man, who had a long criminal record, for police. (
