An Albuquerque, N.M., man was forced to defend himself and the lives of his family members when a group of people forced their way into his apartment and attacked him early on the morning of March 27, 2021.

The incident began earlier that night when the man, his girlfriend and another individual later involved in the assault were at the residence together. The individual left when the couple got into an argument and jumped off the apartment balcony as he left. The man went to check on him and possibly get him to a hospital, if needed. The two got into an argument and the individual told the man, "I will see you again." Sometime after midnight, there was a knock at the door. When the man answered, the individual from earlier and three others rushed into the apartment.

The four intruders then targeted the man and began to attack him. One put the man in a chokehold while the others battered the man with fists and a baton. The man began to lose consciousness during the attack but managed to fight free from the chokehold and rushed to his bedroom to retrieve his gun. His attacker followed and began to assault him again. The man shot at his attackers, firing multiple rounds.

He managed to hit all four of the assailants in the process, who all fled the apartment. The man then called police to report the shooting around 1:15 a.m. Responding officers found three of the attackers nearby, with the individual who had been at the residence earlier that night having multiple gunshot wounds that would prove fatal. The fourth attacker turned up at a local hospital that night with a gunshot wound to the buttocks.

The three surviving attackers are all charged with aggravated burglary, aggravated battery with great bodily harm and conspiracy. The attackers claimed that the individual with the hurt leg told them that he was beat up at the residence, and they went back to retaliate. None of the man's family members who were home at the time, including children, were injured during the incident. Police said that the man, a victim of both home invasion and assault, is not being charged for the defensive shooting. (news.yahoo.com, Albuquerque, N.M., 03/31/2021)

As he was locking his San Francisco, Calif., grocery for the night, Gene Hui saw four young men charging him. He jumped into his pickup, but the gang closed in and yanked the grocer and a waiting friend to the street.

Beating Hui with a bottle, a pair of the thugs tried to wrest a briefcase containing the day’s receipts from him. But Hui countered with a drawn derringer, and shot and injured the two men. Police arrested two of the suspects shortly thereafter when they sought treatment at a local hospital. (The Chronicle, San Francisco, Calif.)
