Review: Ruger 10/22 Carbon Fiber

Reliable, accurate and endlessly customizable, the Ruger 10/22 has sold more than 8 million units since its introduction in 1964, becoming one of the company’s most iconic gun models and one of the industry’s most successful semi-automatic rimfire rifle designs in the process. Much like the AR-15 and the Glock 19, over the decades it has cultivated a massive aftermarket ecosystem; today it is possible to build an entire 10/22-pattern firearm without using a single Ruger-manufactured component.

However, not content to rest on its laurels, Ruger continues to innovate within the rimfire space. In late 2024, the company released a model that re-invents the 10/22 formula with modern materials and performance-minded engineering: the Ruger 10/22 Carbon Fiber. There are two main variations of the rifle; the first, and the subject of this review, is a more value-focused model featuring a Magpul MOE X-22 Stock, while the second is a complete Ruger Custom Shop build with a Grey Birch Modular Chassis. Our test gun (Model 31220) represents a leap forward in the factory-built 10/22 line, not just for its innovation, but also for its impressive weight savings—at only 3 lbs., 8 ozs., this model is the lightest factory 10/22 ever offered.

The centerpiece of the 10/22 Carbon Fiber, and from where it derives its name, is the barrel. The 16.13" barrel has six-groove rifling at a 1:16" RH twist, and the muzzle is threaded 1/2x28 TPI to allow for easy suppression; it ships from the factory with a thread protector installed. This rifle marks the first time Ruger has incorporated carbon fiber into a production 10/22.

Ruger utilized a cold-hammer-forged, stainless-steel “core” that is then fitted into a tensioned carbon-fiber sleeve. This unique combination provides a barrel with the rigidity and profile of—but not the weight of—a heavy bull barrel. It also represents a major engineering step for Ruger; unlike many other carbon-wrapped barrels on the market that are sourced from third-party manufacturers, Ruger makes this barrel in-house, which helps the company control costs and consistency while keeping the price down.

Magpul released the MOE X-22 in December 2023, and it is a lightweight, budget-friendly stock designed specifically for 10/22 rifles. The MOE X-22 sheds excess weight while retaining ergonomic and modular performance. It features Magpul’s signature Trapezoidal Surface Projection texture, the same found on the Ruger/Magpul collaboration RXM pistol, for a firm grip while not being overly aggressive.

The stock includes QD sling swivel mounting points at both the front and rear to allow for easy sling installation. Additionally, the bottom of the fore-end includes a pair of M-Lok slots, giving shooters the ability to mount a bipod or other accessories. The stock on the Model 31220 is given a black finish with speckled white paint that is exclusive to Ruger.

The 10/22 Carbon Fiber ships with many of the premium upgrades available from Ruger that make it feel more like a custom build. It is equipped with the Ruger BX-Trigger; with a crisp break between 2 lbs., 8 ozs., and 3 lbs., minimal overtravel and a positive reset, it provides a significant improvement in feel and precision compared to the standard 10/22 trigger. It also ships with an extended magazine-release lever, which allows for easy magazine changes without breaking grip from the fire controls, especially when ejecting the 10/22’s flush-fitting 10-round rotary magazines. Rounding out the controls is the standard push-button, crossbolt safety.

We tested the rifle’s accuracy potential using Rifleman’s rimfire protocol of five consecutive, 10-shot groups at 50 yards. First, we topped the rifle with a Vortex Viper Gen II PST 5-25X 50 mm FFP scope, gathered three loads featuring different types of projectiles and then headed off to the range. Results with all the ammunition were within the manufacturer’s minimum standard—which calls for a 10-shot grouping capability not exceeding 4" at 100 yards. The standout performer in our tests was CCI Green Tag, which averaged 1.12" groups at 50 yards. The tightest single group came from SK Rifle Match, measuring just 0.82", showcasing the barrel’s consistency and precision.

The 10/22 Carbon Fiber is easily one of the most compelling factory 10/22 variants to ship from Ruger in recent memory. With its ultralight weight, premium BX-Trigger, extended magazine release, Magpul X-22 stock and carbon-fiber-wrapped barrel, it delivers high performance straight from the box without the complexity, cost or uncertainty of assembling a custom rifle from aftermarket parts. It is a phenomenal choice for introducing younger shooters to firearms or for use by those with physical impairments that make lifting heavier firearms a challenge. Whether you’re looking for a lightweight varmint rifle, a high-end plinker or a base platform for competition shooting, the 10/22 Carbon Fiber is the Ruger to beat.
