SIG Sauer's modular SIG MCX rifle, announced at the 2015 SHOT Show, is now shipping in 5.56 mm caliber, with chamberings in .300 Blackout and 7.62x39 mm to soon follow. Three variants of the rifle will be available to the commercial market: semi-automatic; short-barrel rifle (SBR); and pistol configurations. A full line of conversion kits and accessories will also be available soon. Additionally, in an effort to educate consumers about the MCX, the manufacturer has created a series of webisodes to introduce viewers to the experts and engineers behind the modular rifle, the requirements that guided its design, and the benefits and advantages of the platform.

“This is not an ‘AR’. This is the new standard in modern rifle systems,” said John Brasseur, Director of Product Management for SIG Sauer, Inc. “We’ve brought the minds behind the SIG MCX to the forefront to talk about the development, from the drawing board to production.”

The SIG MCX was designed for optimum short-barrel performance with the .300 Blackout cartridge and a silencer, which ultimately offers superior suppression capability and enhanced reliability with both supersonic and subsonic loads.

Sharing a modular design with the SIG MPX, the MCX is mission-adaptable, allowing barrels, handguards and stocks to be swapped in the field in a matter of minutes. Changing between 5.56 NATO and .300 Blackout is as simple as swapping barrels and operating rods. Conversion to 7.62x39 mm simply requires an additional bolt face change. Barrel lengths can also be changed, with 16" and 9" versions initially available. A two-position gas system makes the transition from subsonic to supersonic seamless. In combat situations, the MCX can run supersonic on the silenced setting without damaging the firearm or negatively impacting reliability.

Other features offered include a unique recoil assembly that does not require a buffer tube, allowing for side-folding stocks. A full-length Picatinny top rail allows for the mounting of lights or optics. Removable SIG Sauer iron sights are standard. The lower receiver offers familiar AR-style controls, with an ambidextrous selector and mag release as standard. The upper is compatible with Mil-Spec AR-15 lowers and, with the use of a SIG MCX Stock Kit, allows consumers to fully upgrade their legacy system.

The rifle variant will feature a 16" cold hammer-forged barrel, while the SBR will come with a 9" barrel. Both will offer a choice of four stocks: a low profile, side-folding skeletonized stock, a telescoping stock, a tubular side folding stock, or a folding telescopic stock. The pistol variant will feature a 9" barrel and a side-folding SBX Pistol Stabilizing Brace.
