A linear compensator designed specifically for use with pistol-caliber carbines, the Slim XL from Kaw Valley Precision directs muzzle gases forward and away from the shooter—reducing the perceived report of the firearm at the shooter’s ear. The effect is increased by a large expansion chamber that allows the gases to both slow and cool prior to leaving the device. Measuring 4.25” long with an outer diameter of only 1.2”—narrow enough to fit within many free-floating handguard designs—and weighing only 2.4 ozs., the Slim XL is machined from hard-coat-anodized 6061 aluminum, although steel models rated for center-fire-rifle use are also available. Our test sample was the 5/8x24 TPI .45-cal. version, however, three other thread pitches are also offered, all retailing for $45. For more information, check out kawvalleyprecision.com.
