Just because someone is going to a medical facility doesn’t make them any more vulnerable than anyone else. An armed robber targeted a Michigan patient who had pulled into the parking lot at a dialysis center for treatment early one morning. The Oakland County Sheriff’s Department said the robber stepped out of a wooded area near the parking lot, pulled his gun and demanded the driver’s wallet. The patient responded by drawing his own gun and asking, “Do you really want to do this?” The assailant turned and ran. Police tried to track the suspect with dogs, but couldn’t find him. An off-duty Greenville, N.C., police officer was picking up food at a local restaurant when several customers recognized him and asked him to intervene in a fight that was occurring in the parking lot. As he approached the scene of the altercation, the officer identified himself to the actors. At this point, one of the men involved in the fight pointed a gun at the off-duty cop and opened fire on him. The officer then returned fire, wounding his attacker. The assailant was taken to a nearby hospital, where he died from his injuries. No other injuries were reported. (The Daily Reflector, Greenville, NC, 8/9/15)

December 1979
Seventeen-year-old Marsha Gilpatric, hearing a disturbance in the yard of her East Bridgewater, N.H., home, went to investigate and was viciously attacked by two loose dogs. Fortunately, Eugene Morgan witnessed the attack and rushed to the defenseless girl’s aid. Morgan killed one of the dogs with his .22-cal. pistol and scared away the other. Gilpatric was rushed to the hospital for treatment of the wounds to her nose, legs and arms. (The Enterprise, Bristol, NH)
