Springfield’s Tactical Response Pistols

In the late 1990s, Springfield Armory’s Custom Shop gained a legendary reputation after supplying the FBI’s Hostage Rescue Team with the company’s Professional Model M1911s. Soon after, Springfield’s Tactical Response Pistol (TRP) line emerged as a semi-custom offering for consumers who wanted M1911s with a similar build quality and feature set at a more attainable price, not to mention a significantly shorter wait time. In January 2024, Springfield refreshed its TRP line with four new models.

Two exciting additions are those models equipped with the “Carry Contour,” a bobbed bottom-rear portion of the forged frame that reduces the chance of the gun printing under a concealment garment. Both pistols have a 4.25" barrel and are finished in all-black or Coyote Brown Cerakote, respectively.

Joining the Carry Contour guns are two full-size pistols with 5" forged barrels, one black and one Coyote Brown, each outfitted with a three-slot Picatinny rail on the frame’s dustcover. Included on these two guns are two-piece magazine-well funnels that provide a generous opening for fast reloads.

A salient feature of Springfield’s TRP line is that frames and slides are hand-selected and matched to each other for the best possible fit. Once a suitable pair is found, these two components are then numbered to each other, ensuring they remain together throughout the build process. American Rifleman Field Editor Justin Dyal spent time with each of the new TRPs, and you can read about his range experience at americanrifleman.org/2024trps.
