A Gun’s Name

In the movie “Full Metal Jacket,” marines named their rifles as a symbol of closeness with the one thing that could save their lives. Of course, they also slept with their guns, which is a completely different issue that I’m not going to touch. But the act of naming a firearm can provide a familiarity with a specific firearm, and it can be a lot of fun. A gun's name can be serious, lighthearted or downright ludicrous.

I’ve known a lot of hunters and shooters who have given their guns names like Black Thunder, Thumper and Old Painless. I’ve also heard names like AT&T, because of the slogan “Reach out and touch someone.” Of course, there are many that can’t be used in polite company, but that is part of the fun of naming a gun.

So far, I’ve only named two of my firearms—my Kimber Ultra Carry and my Ruger LCP. I call my Kimber “baby” to remind me to treat it right and it will always take care of me, and my LCP is named “Peanut,” mainly because the name irritates my wife. What can I say, I’m a guy.

Naming a gun can be a very personal issue that involves showing respect to the gun, as well as others if you’re so inclined, and it usually makes a great story. Share your gun’s name and story behind that name, and the best one will receive a DeSantis Nemesis pocket holster that fits most .38 snubbies.

I have a Springfield XD .40 and I call her Black Betty. I came up with the name listening to the song "Black Betty". I always take care of and treat her like a lady so the name fits well. Plus, shes so rock steady and shes always ready (bam-BA-lam)!

My family has a skeet competition every Thanksgiving to decide who cooks, so of course the ribbing reaches childlike levels when discussing firearms. We call my wife's youth 20ga 'Spacewaster'. But when my brother pulls out his 930 Waterfowl, we know to make room for the 'Over-compansator'

I named my M1 Garand "Not Fair". The name came about because I could outshoot just about anyone with it, then I fitted it with a mil-dot scope. My friends looked at it and said, "that's not fair". Now I look at them and say, you're right, that's not fair!

I call my Glock 36 "Gaston" of course for Herr Glock. I go back & forth on a name for my Ruger LCP: "Bill" (With the greatest respect for Mr. Ruger) or "Elsie Pea". I tried calling my 1911 "Sam" or "Sam Colt", but it is a Springfield, & John Browning is the real brains on the 1911. I have finally gotten my wife to speak in code in public about my carry status. Instead of asking, "You carrying your gun?" where someone may hear her, I got her to ask if I have "spoken to Jack?" She rolls her eyes about me being such a "24" Jack Bauer fan, but it's discreet and we both get a chuckle out of it.

I named my Ruger Gunsite Scout Rifle 'Pinky' both because it looked to have a slight bit of the color pink in its wood laminate stock and because that 'girly color pink' is flat-out ironic for such a loud powerful carbine. Oh, and the name was short!

My deer gun (Browning x-bolt) in 30-06 is named the Brown Recluse. It might be more deadly then the spider, depends on who is doing the shooting though

My wife named my Colt Python "Peter" and the Glock "Gertrude". Hey, she likes to shoot, so it's part of the package.

I had thought about giving my pistol a name for some time. It's a certain Lightweight Compact 9mm. Considering that LC are also the initials for Lewis Carroll, I immediately thought of Alice. I'll give it some more consideration, but it seems the most appropriate for the moment.
