A young woman walked out the door on her way to work when she spotted a pit bull with a history of aggressive behavior on the loose. She quickly ducked back inside her father’s home and called police to report the wandering dog. After waiting for the dog to leave, the father got a firearm for safety and escorted his daughter to the vehicle. Within moments the dog appeared and again began acting aggressively. The homeowner tried to slowly back his way into the home, but the dog backed him against an exterior wall. He fired a shot, killing the dog. (Everett Herald, Everett, WA, 08/18/11)

The Armed Citizen Extra
(The following account did not appear in the print version of American Rifleman.)

The owner of a small deli was working late one night when two men entered his shop toting guns and demanding money. With a gun pressed to his chest, the store owner grabbed his own .357 Magnum revolver and fired several shots at both men, striking them and causing them to flee. Both men were later apprehended when they called 9-1-1 seeking medical attention for their wounds. (Arkansas Democrat-Gazette, Little Rock, AR, 01/06/11)

From The Armed Citizen Archive
October 1979: When an armed robber smashed the plate glass window of a San Miguel, Calif., market, Gilbert Buckman, the owner's son-in-law, heard the commotion, armed himself and investigated. Buckman apprehended the burglar and held him at gunpoint until police arrived. (The Telegram-Tribune, San Luis Obispo, Calif. 7/16)

Edie, I'd stick with the handguns. You can't justifiably "defend" yourself from long range. Once they're that far away, the threat will be over. Also, you have to think of overpenetration. If you have loved ones, you do not want to shoot a man with a rifle round, it will just pass through and go through your house and out yonder.

300 meters? If you shoot someone at that range, your going to have a hard time claiming self defense.

Edie, you say you may feel that a rifle or shotgun might be useful for distance protection. The question is, how much distance are you referring to? For shorter shorter distances a shotgun may be just the thing for you. Longer distances any one of a number of .223 so-called "Black Rifles" might be just what you need. The recoil is much less than other calibers but still effective out to around 300 meters. Many black rifles have adjustable length stocks to provide for a "just right" pull length for you. I may be setting myself up for a good ole flaming however, in the end, it is completely up to you, Edie. Best of luck.

I am a woman living alone...I have two side arms but I feel a rifle or a shot gun may be useful for distance protection...what is a good choice for a female?

I pray that I will have both the time to retrieve my gun and the will to use it to protect myself and my family in the event something like the events in The Armed Citizen happens in my presence.
