Older Texans Preparing

According to the Fort-Worth Star Telegram, older Texans are applying for concealed-handgun licenses at a higher rate than younger people, with even 16 people in their 90s applying to carry a concealed handgun.

While only assumptions can be made on the reasons, it certainly looks like older people in Texas are realizing that the great equalizer on strength is a firearm. People in their 50s and above in age are more healthy and active than ever before, but most have still lost the strength they had in their youth.

At the same time, people above 50 usually have more wealth than younger people, making them prime targets for criminals. However, with almost 600,000 people with concealed-handgun licenses, the less than law-abiding individuals in Texan had better be careful. They don’t know who is armed and who is not, and that is a good thing for honest citizens.

I agree with your premise on us “Seniors” being the prime acquirers of CC permits, and not just in Texas. I got my permit when I was 64 (I’m 71 now) and moved from LA, CA to Arizona. I figured I was getting to old to fight or run and since my daily accomplishment is the 50 yard hike to and from the central mail box, it just seem prudent to be able to defend myself.

Just read an article by a British gentleman who was the subject of a hot burglary. He woke up and the burglar was in his bedroom. He yelled at the burglar who then took off. He chased the burglar downstairs and through the street when he realized that wasn't such a good idea as he wasn't armed and the burglar might be. He was grateful that the cops responded promptly — 20 minutes later. He had no doubt that the cops would apprehend the burglar (good luck with that thought) and that the burglar would spend some time in prison (hold that thought for a couple of years.) He said he was glad he lived in Britain where the police responded so promptly and where burglars were just after goods and not something more serious. I wasn't sure if I should be aghast at his cluelessness or amused at his clueless attitude in what could well have been a very serious situation. I'm glad I live in the U.S. where I have more to defend myself with than a bedroom slipper.

Yep, pretty much sums it up. Been mugged twice in my life. None recently, but they taught me not to take my safety for granted! When seconds count, Cops are minutes away!
