Ruger SP101 in .357 Mag.

The new SP101 in .357 Mag. features a 4.2-inch barrel, engraved walnut grip panels and HiViz sights.

12/8/2011

Sturm, Ruger & Company has introduced a five-shot SP101 revolver chambered in the powerful .357 Mag. cartridge.

The new SP101 features a 4.2-inch barrel and improved sights in stainless steel with a satin finish, plus checkered and engraved walnut grip panels in a one-piece rubber grip. The revolver weighs 29.5 ounces and comes with a fully adjustable square notch blade rear sight and a green HiViz front sight. The barrel is also fully shrouded over the ejector rod.

“The SP101 has been an extremely popular small frame revolver since its inception in 1988, but it has always featured a short barrel and minimal sights," said Chris Killoy, Ruger vice president of Sales and Marketing. "This new version is a quality .357 Mag. small-frame revolver with a longer, full-shroud barrel and improved sights that offers the shooter a better sight picture, longer sight radius and additional weight to better control recoil. I am confident enthusiasts will find that this 4.2-inch .357 Mag. is a great all around center-fire revolver that remains true to classic SP101 styling.”

I have a 3.5" SP101 357Mag and it will shoot 2" groups at 50yrds with any load I've tried. You can shoot clays all day with it with narry a miss, although it is hard to hold on to. It is a great little revolver, one I will always trust in a pinch. It is much smaller than a 1911, has according to the stats better stopping power and you don't have to worry about stovepiping or feed problems when your life is on the line. Awesome gun!

I have been waiting for Ruger to come out with this variation because of its compact size. Unfortunately they went with the full length underlug which adds unnecessary weight.I would much prefer a configuration like the older K Frame Smiths. I would also get rid of the fiber front sight. I have never understood this predeliction for heavy underlugged barrels; just more useless weight. I guess I'll hang on to my odel 19, even though it is larger.

Alot nicer than the original version that I had eons ago. Like the grips and the HiViz sights. The original model wasn't as nice.

The strength of the sp101 has always been its compact size and ability to be concealed. The full sized duty type revolver was well done in the GP100 platform. We will see how a full sized barrel will sell in a 5 shot frame.

I own one. Great gun although I swapped out the grips for ones more suited to my needs.
