Always a popular stop for attendees of Media Day at the Range, the Springfield Armory booth was dedicated to showing off two of the company's most buzzworthy upcoming releases: the XD-S 4.0 and the 9 mm Range Officer.

The XD-S 4.0 delivers all of the same sought-after features of its predecessor-just with a 4-inch barrel. Born of a desire to give shooters a compact, easy-to-conceal .45, the original XD-S featured a slim, single-stack design that's only one-inch in width. Its trigger has a short travel and a short reset to keep you on target, and the snag free sights make it holster friendly. Now shooters have a slightly longer option. The XD-S is expected to be available beginning in February 2014.

The Range Officer, a 9 mm 1911 design, has the same quality forged national match frame and slide as the company's Trophy Match and TRP 1911s-and it gets the same precision fit as those pistols, too. Add in the same national match stainless steel barrel and bushing, and you've got a pistol that shoots well beyond its price tag.
