The latest polymer-frame XD pistol from Springfield Armory is a subcompact single-stack chambered in .45 ACP, and one of the smallest big-bore semi-automatics ever.
Thanks to its XD-S in .45 ACP, Springfield Armory was one of the toasts of SHOT Show 2012. Heck, the XD-S was so innovative that it went on to be named the American Rifleman Handgun of the Year. When you hit a home run like that, there's not a lot that needs changing, and Springfield agreed. So, for 2013, Springfield rolled out a slightly updated version of the XD-S: except this time it's in 9 mm.
Nearly identical to the .45 ACP version, save for the 9 mm chambering, the XD-S 9 mm provides all the perks of the original design-just with a smaller bore and substantially less recoil than its "big" brother.
With the subcompact, single-stack .45 ACP Springfield XD-S pistol introduced last year taking awards and flying off shelves, why introduce a 9 mm Luger? In a word, recoil.
The firearm industry’s safety record is enviable, and the manner in which the few recalls are handled reflects well on the professionals at each company’s helm. Take the recent voluntary recall of certain Springfield 3.3 XD-S 9 mms and .45 ACPs, for example.
Rob Leatham took some time to discuss Springfield Armory's new XD-S 4.0 and 9 mm Range Officer with Associate Editor Joe Kurtenbach at SHOT Show 2014's Media Day at the Range.
Veteran competitive shooters Kippi and Rob Leatham chat about the safety features of the Spingfield XD-S and why it is the perfect gun for new shooters.
