Beginning Jan. 16, 2017, firearm dealers are required to use the new and slightly revised version of BATFE’s “Firearms Transaction Record” [pdf] for gun sales/transfers. Most enthusiasts accustomed to the paperwork will hardly notice the changes, but here’s a quick look at a few.
Noticeably absent are the words “Over-The-Counter” in the new version’s title. Further down, question No. 6 was changed from “Gender” to “Sex.” Choices remain the same, “Male” and “Female,” but “As Often as Possible” would have been a much more politically correct and bathroom-neutral option.
Question 11’s section “e” now includes a clarification. “Warning: The use or possession of marijuana remains unlawful under Federal law regardless of whether it’s been legalized or decriminalized for medicinal or recreational purposes in the state where you reside,” it reads.
Most of the other changes clarify redundant wording, a response to input [pdf] from the National Shooting Sports Foundation, among many others—just when you thought the government doesn’t listen. Orchid Advisors has a complete rundown on the changes, including those impacting dealers as they complete the form.
