PDAs kicked off a revolution in handheld firing solutions-with units like the Horus ATrag in the hands of the military’s precision shooters. While they need to engage targets at unheard of distances-in some of the worst weather conditions imaginable-such is not the case for most recreational shooters and hunters.
Zeiss recognizes that fact, and kept things pretty simple in its system, which is now available for iPhone, iPod, iPad and Android devices. The app works specifically with Zeiss scopes and reticles. “…[W]e wanted those who use our proprietary ballistic reticles to have a ballistic tool that could be used virtually anywhere you have a signal for your device,” stated Mike Jensen, President of Carl Zeiss Sports Optics. So if you don’t have any of the company’s flawlessly performing optics, the apps aren’t for you.
The app emulates the company’s Internet ballistics software, which you can work for free here. It even calculates your optimum magnification, providing precise hash-mark-distance values, although you can override that setting and watch the second-focal plane reticle’s values change. Variables for both versions include altitude, temperature, sight height above the bore and muzzle velocity. There’s also a long list of factory loads in different chamberings.
The Zeiss mobile Ballistic Calculator app can be downloaded at Google Play (Android app) and iTunes (iPhone app) for $4.99. Whether you own a Zeiss or not, it’s always interesting to take a look at this kind of software when it’s free. Watching the values of the reticle change as you dial down the magnification on the Internet version is worth the price of admission alone.
