It was around 10:30 p.m. when Matt Fugate heard a commotion from inside his home. When Fugate ran to investigate, he found two men assaulting his brother, John Fugate. One of the suspects was reportedly brandishing what turned out to be a pellet gun. When Fugate saw his brother in danger, he did not hesitate to take action, "I raced for the gun vault and had my gun in my hand in five seconds, …" he explained. Fugate ordered the intruders not to move and to keep their hands up. While Fugate held the intruders at gun-point, his brother was able to call the police. There were no serious injuries reported. Matt Fugate later commented on the ordeal, "I was scared and angry … I'm relieved that nothing bad came of it … that it ended the way it did, peacefully." (TheBlaze.com, Evansville, IN, 4/27/13)

Two brothers kidnapped a couple and forced them to help rob a bank where the wife worked. Police say the husband shot the abductors after the robbery, killing one and wounding the other. According to the police statement, two men allegedly held the victims at gunpoint in their home on August 1. They were bound and transported to the bank where the wife worked. The suspects returned to the house and made the husband drive them south in his truck, where he managed to get his personal firearms and shoot both suspects. He then called 911. November 1969: Service station operator Frank Labato of Denver, Colo., came into his station to find three men rifling his cash register. He quickly drew his .32 revolver from a desk drawer, and gave chase, wounding one man and recovering the stolen money. (Rocky Mountain News, Denver, Colo.)
