Twenty-Gauge Super Slugs

Until recently conventional wisdom held that using a 20-gauge shotgun for deer hunting was a bad idea. The 20 gauge was something ladies and kids used only for its reduced recoil, and the Foster-style slug was the only option. But advanced technology has improved the performance of 20-gauge and now they bring 200-yard-distant quarry within range.

"Foster slug was the only option". Brennekes have been around longer than most of the people who access this site have been alive..... You can get one oz. 3" 20 ga. Brennekes, as well as 3/4oz. 2 3/4" ones. The latter appear to strike a metal plate just as hard as the old .50-70-450gr....A bit less projectile weight in the 3/4 oz. but higher MV than the old blackpowder buffalo load. Dave O.

You need a rifled portion of the barrel somewhere along the line to use this slug, though, don't you?

I put the 20 gauge Remington 870 on my 'List' of guns I plan to buy over time a while back. It would be my first shotgun. I thought I would enjoy shooting the 20 a bit more due to less recoil. I sure do like these Federal loads. The Remington 870 is quick to swap barrels. A rifled barrel for these fancy Federal loads would sure be fun!
