I have a problem with rail mounted lights, they don't fit in a holster for me to conceal well, and the problem I have is pointing the handgun at things I don't want to shoot so I can see things or people. Therefore I like a hand held light. I'd hate to have to pull my handgun to find the keys I dropped. Enough said here

Another variation of the surefire technique is to place the light between your ring and middle fingers of your support hand. Using a slightly modified two hand hold, the end cap of the light is pressed against the fingers of the shooting hand to activate the switch. This also frees up your thumb and index finger to grab and load a magazine without having to let go or readjust the light.

I have to say, my favorite is the "get a gun with a rail and rail mounted light on it". That's what my HD weapons have, with SureFire lights on them. For both of my pistols and shotty it leaves both hands free to control the weapon but also be able to activate/deactivate the light.
