My Carry Gun

Choosing a carry gun can be one of the most difficult decisions a firearms owner can ever face. You have to consider stopping power, capacity, comfort, safety and sheer practicality. It’s a balancing act, and one worthy of careful consideration. Here are 10 choices made by some of the editors and contributors in NRA Publications. What did (or will) you choose? Let us know.

Charter Off Duty .38 spl in my pocket.I do this because my 97 lb. 5ft. 2 in. wife carries her Walther .22 auto. in her holster purse and decides as soon as it gets dark she either wants my Bersa or CA .38 to put in the other holster in her purse.I carry a 15 shot mag in my FN with one in the pipe,I also keep 2x15 rd. mags on my rig and 2x14 rd mags in my range bag in the car. I keep 3x5shot speed loaders for my .38 and 3x 5 shot loaders for my .44 mag in carriers on my belt.My shoulder rig acts as suspenders and helps hold my pants up.

Most times, I carry a full size Springfield Armory, Model 1911-A1 in .45 ACP. On those occasions when smaller is better, I carry a Colt, Lightweight Officer's, Model MK IV, series 80 in .45 ACP. Anything less would be...unarmed.

Today it's an FNX-45 , last week it was a Bersa 15 shot .380 , next it may be my Chiapa 5' .357 mag ; it depends on how deep I want to dig in my safes . I am a refugee from the Marist Republic of Aztlan(California) and I just enjoy the recovery of my personal Liberty . One day I carried an HK Mark 23 Socom , a Taurus P85 , a Taurus Millenium Pro .45ACP and a Davis .22 mag to the restaurant just to see if I could go unnoticed . I carried my Robinson Arms M-96 Expeditionary Carbine(Stoner 63) , my Mark 23 , and my Charter Arms Bulldog .44 in Clarion in the open carry rally last winter . All my citizens arrests of murderers , hit and runs , and other thugs in California were done un-packed , twenty years here in PA I've never had to stop any punks , but I'm better armed .

Because of my age (70) and my severe osteo-arthritis, I can no longer hack the weight of my Ruger P345 or my Sig P6. The Ruger LCP and its big brother the LC9 are now my go-to weapons for carry with the other two waiting at home if needed for home defense. In short, my eyes are good, my hand steady but the rest of my body is shot to h___. I'll leave it to the young guys to haul all of that weight around.

I carry a HK USP cambered in .40 S&W. I like the ease of recoil that the round provides when combined with the USP. I also like how the USP's controls are very similar to the 1911's with the added option of double action firing the first round. I carry it in both open and concealed carry rigs. My concealed carry rig is a Phantom light compatible model since I have a Streamlight TLR-3 mounted on the rail. My open carry rig is a fully adjustable to fit the wearer and the pistol tactical holster from Condor.

In many ways, this is the best choice for serious concealed carry. It combines the ergonomics, accuracy, and stopping power of the 1911 with the size/weight range of a steel J-Frame magnum. It is also underrated because many people wrongly believe that it is unreliable. I own six Kimber Ultras and haven't had any problems with them.

Living in a northern state with 4 different seasons one carry gun doesn't always work. My winter gun is a ParaOdnance P-14, easy to conceal with the heavy winter clothing. Spring, Fall and most summer days I carry a P-12, smaller and easier to conceal but still .45ACP. During the hot days of summer when clothing is light on occasion I will carry a Colt Pocketlite in .380ACP. The common thread here is they all variations of the 1911A1 and I don't have to think about how they function because they all function the same no matter which one I am carrying at the time.

I am an American living in Canada, so one of my criteria is for the gun to be "Canada-legal", essentially 10 rounds and 4.25" barrel. I have bought and tried just about every decent Canada legal handgun available and some of them are amazing. But, I defer to several MILLION LEO's carrying Glocks on-duty, off duty and concealed, on both sides of our border. And I keep coming back to my Glock 30SF and my Glock 36 with +1's on the two spare magazines I carry with the latter and with laser assist on both. I have tried most every holster available (I have the box of them to prove it) and keep coming back to my Smartcarry which can be worn in any weather and with any clothing without printing or flashing. I also love my $29 steel clip no-name holsters when I can wear a cover garment. Takes two hands to get it on or off but it stays put and you can reholster with one hand. The Smartcarry is elasticized and carries down around your crotch. No tight pants and you are good to go. I use Speer Gold Dots and Federal Hydra Shocks in .45ACP. My Glocks have NEVER failed me and withstand dust, dirt and lint although I DO take them down regularly and clean them. At CQB range they are plenty accurate, especially with laser. And they are 110% reliable with a bang on every trigger pull. I generally carry with one in the tube despite there being no grip/thumb safety, treating them as a DA revolver and am very careful in holstering and unholstering, especially since I tend to tuck things in unless TRULY casual and looking like a tourist or a slob (sorry). What we have on this list is a dog's breakfast much to my surprise, with little consensus. Keep in mind, as well, that I must install an extended barrel on most of my wee Glocks to get to 105mm. I also LOVE my HK P7M8 squeeze cocker for simple pocket carry. Only 9mm but they are about the safest guns on the market. The Glocks also have the advantage of being easy to work on, clean and have few moving parts. Each to his/her own.

Bersa Thunder DLX .380 with extended magazines, Hornady Critical Defense ammo...accuracy is perfection, putting all the shots you need exactly where you need them to stop your target. Backup is a Ruger SP101 .357 with a 3.1 inch barrel, with 5 rounds in the cylinder. Generally use .38 Special +P Hornady Critical Defense ammo to allow for follow up shots, if needed. Always carry extra magazines and speed loaders. On the belt OTW holsters work fine, but for concealed carry have to be covered with clothing of some type.

The word "reliable" used in this piece does not match my on experience with an early Kahr PM-9. Barrel was recalled to recontour and polish the feed ramp (to eliminate FTF problems), and after return, the barrel started hammering itself at the lock-up points (metallurgy and design issue). I lost confidence in the overall design and manufacturing quality. Current carry pieces: S&W 642 .38+P when concealment is tougher; otherwise HK P2000SK in .40 S&W (pure quality--never an FTF or FTE in thousands of rounds).

THIS PROVES IT! Ask 100 different shooters what the best carry gun/ammo combination is and you'll get 100 different opinions and not one of them is based on personal experience. Let's go back to the premise given: stopping power, capacity, comfort, safety and sheer practicality. And which quality is first? Stopping Power! Unless you have enough shock and awe in your hand, you and the bad guy will die together and the other attributes are rendered moot. Given that the FBI, the Army, and the autopsy table have fully vetted handgun stopping power, we know that the cartridges that give you the best chance of saving your butt are .40 and up in autos and .357 and up in revolvers. If you now carry a 9, you can probably upgrade to a .40 and keep the same size platform. If you have a .38, you can get a small .357. Handloaders can easily load the .40 down to where they can bang away all day long at the range and not hurt their hand. And .357 shooters can turn out .38 Special-power loads no sweat. Then, when the whistle blows, you can man up and get off one or two full-power rounds and to hell if it hurts a little. Afterwards, you can shake your shooting hand to make it feel better while downing a beer with the other. To celebrate: good guy 1, bad guy 0.

9mm guns are great for cops and people who may have to shoot at someone who is fleeing at a distance, but a carry gun is for close range self defense in nearly all cases. The LC380 is a much better choice than the LC9 for this purpose. It has the size for easy conceal and small hands, and the stopping power to put a man down which is why I got one for my wife. My personal carry weapon is Springfield Armory's XD-S 45ACP, and I love it! It's got big firepower in a small package for easy concealed carry and still fits in my bigger hands very well.

So far it has worked out very well and it's comfortable. I simple conceal it under a polo or T shirt. The XDs is an absolute pleasure to shoot. The recoil on my XDs is equivalent to my Glock 22 .40. You may want to look into shooting a XDs and rethink your list. Just sayin.

I am a fairly new gun owner. After doing hours of research, talking to friends in law enforcement and visiting many gun shops....I decided on The Shield....the problem was finding one.... so I had started looking at other handgun options. In haste I bought a gun that was nice, but I wasn't sold on it. The store had a 90 day 'no fire' return policy so after a few days I decided to go back and shop some more. Jackpot!! They had got a shipment of 20 Shields in that morning. I cannot say one bad thing about this gun! It fits my hand perfectly, it is small and compact for easy concealment. It fires flawlessly and the trigger is nice and crisp with a short reset. It comes with a seven round flush fit magazine and an eight round magazine with an extended base plate. I ordered an additional eight round magazine from Smith and Wesson for around $38. I carry IWB with a Foxx Hybrid holster, very similar to the Crossbreed holsters, but half the price. It is very comfortable, holds the gun perfectly with fitted kydex. The Shield is so lightweight and small, it is easy to forget I'm even carrying. I have both eight round mags loaded with Hornady Critical Defense ammo. If you are looking at purchasing a gun for concealed carry, I highly recommend The M&P Shield by Smith and Wesson!!!

This fine weapon comes out of it's Kydex holster and is spot on when raised into firing position. Firing 100-200 rds in practice isn't punishing, either. You will never wish you had the smallest, lightest, most comfortable gun to put on your hip on in your pocket when you have to shoot to defend you life. You will wish you had the largest framed, highest capacity, good sized caliber when the flag is raised. Carrying a gun should be akin to buying a carseat or wearing a parachute. Ease of installing the carseat should be the last option you consider. You buy the carseat for the day a tractor trailer t-bones your car. You wear the parachute the whole flight so its on when its needed. Comfortability should always be at the bottom of your list in characteristics of a handgun for personal protection. Besides, proper holster selection and modern holster technology more than compensates for that.

Also mine were unreliable w anything other than hardball. Straight blowback design made practice painful, not to mention frequent hammer bite. Sold both of them. My favs are Colt Mustang Pocketlite 380(12.5oz) for pocket carry,S&W 342PD(11.7oz) for warm weather IWB, and LW Colt Officers (34oz) for winter IWB. Still love the LOOK of PPKs though. Stainless and polymer construction with stainless mags will withstand the constant moisture and salt from sweat and the 7# trigger is very solid and smooth. I also love the fact that my Kahr has no external safety. I added a set of Trijicon night sights and I carry my Kahr in a Don Hume IWB leather holster for easy on, easy off capabilities. I paired my CW9 up with it’s little brother, the P380, for the warmest days of summer when clothing is at a minimum. I carry my P380 in either a D.M. Bullard IWB leather holster or a Desantis Super Fly pocket holster. This pocket pistol, unlike most other 380’s, has real sights so I had Trijicon sights installed and for added accuracy I installed a Crimson Trace Laserguard on it. The trigger pull is a very smooth 6#.

The 1911 is timeless. Name another gun as widely known and made by as many manufacturers after over 100 years. You can't. The 1911 is the fighting gun all others are compared to. There MAY be a few as good as the 1911 but, there are none better. The 1911 has the perfect balance of power, reliability and accuracy. The round it is chambered for, the 45ACP, is a proven stopper and, the perfect balance of power and controlibility in a handgun. The platform itself balances well and points naturally. It's safe, with both a thumb-safety and a grip safety. Both of which are easily mastered. It takes a bit of practice but, once mastered , all these points make the 1911 the fastest, most accurate, aimed first-shot pistol on earth. Many say the 1911 and the 45ACP are limiting. That the gun only carries seven or eight rounds. Well, two things; 1.) As with the comparison of the 5.56 and the 308 as far as carrying ammo, you don't need as many shots with the 308.It has about four times the stopping power. Same with the 45, you don't need as many rounds. 2.) As a wise man once told me in Class," If you settle a problem with seven rounds, what, on God's Green-Earth, makes you assume you will with fourteen?" Diligentia-Vis-Celeritas

I don't totally agree with this top ten list for 2 years i carried a springfield emp 9 which was a very good carry very light weight, but for the last 6 months I've carried a glock 26 and both of them are excellent carries atleast one of these should have been in the top ten.

As a rookie and "older" citizen, I looked at small guns. The LC9 with laser is a beautiful thing! It has an easy slide, comfortable fit. The one I liked best was camo skinned with the NRA logo on it... but the pawnshop broker wanted over $700 for it, so I doubt I'll get that one. Saving my $$ for the regular one. ~NRA Member

I love my 1991A-1 Colt in .45acp I don't think you can find a more rounded fight stopper. The only draw back is weight, if I'm going to be packing for extended periods of time I'll use my Glock model 23 in .40 S&W it gives good stopping power with 13 in the mag and 1 in the pipe and a light weight package.

Taurus Millenium Pro in 40 S&W is my choice. Also like the Rossi M85 in 38 spcl.

My choice was a Taurus Model 85,because of weight and size.It is a .38special+ along with a leather fitted paddle holster, very good combination easy to carry, and carries a lot of punch.

Really, no Glocks listed. If 72[%] of LE carry them how does a Glock not make the list. Hard to take this top ten serious.

I carry the same pistol I carried as a duty weapon. 9mm Beretta FC. Trained with it, comfortable with it and know it like the back of my hand.

Springfield XDs in a Comp-tac Minatour IWB. Very comfortable to wear and you get the comfort of having a 45acp in the chamber.

The Smith & Wesson M&P Shield is at the top of my list as well. But I also carry a Springfield XDS. I rotate them every few days to clean lint etc out of them and also take the stress off the magazine springs from time to time.

M&P Shield 9 mm is my primary concealed carry gun...love the trigger pull...shoots great!!! Never thought I would find a gun that I like as well as the Glock 19 but I did.

I carry a Thompson Auto model 1911 rally like that big 45 for stopping power.

I find your lack of Glock disturbing.

find the Kimber pro carry comfortable in mid back carry..hands down stopping power and seven rds. are pleanty for an experiencesd shooter.
