Winchester PDX1 Defender Ammo

Winchester PDX1 AmmoWinchester Ammunition's PDX1 Defender line is one of the industry's most respected line of self-defense oriented ammo... and it's getting some new additions.

First and foremost is the Segmenting Slug (pictured) for 12-gauge shotguns. The PDX1 Defender slug segments into three pieces fired into certain barriers—combining the advantages of a slug and buckshot.

Also joining the PDX1 Defender ranks are two different rounds for centerfire rifles: the .223 Rem. cartridge and the .308 Win. cartridge. Each round deposits high levels of energy and expands without over-penetration.

The specs for each of the three new releases can be found here:

Shotshell Specs:

Gauge Length of Shell Slug Weight Velocity
12 2 3/4" 1 oz. Segmenting Slug 1600 fps

Centerfire Specs:

Cartridge Bullet Weight Velocity
.223 Rem 77 Grain 2850
.308 Win 120 Grain 2500

I just ran a box and a half of the segmenting PDX1 slugs through my mossberg 500 while practicing today and I have only one major concern. It seems as though some of the slugs never 'fragged' and defiantly carried enough energy to overpenetrate. At 25' they split up fine through a box made of 1' thick compressed carpeted wood. The backside of the box (about 1' away from the entrance hole) showed about a 7' triangle spread. However, when I fired the round at a steel 55 gal barrel at roughly 10', the slug left a perfect circle entrance hole on both sides of the barrel? It never split up against the hard steel, at a much more 'reasonable' home defense distance. Made me wonder.
