Springfield XD-S

The latest addition to Springfield's popular Xtreme Duty (XD) line, the XD-S made its debut at SHOT Show 2012—and left as one of the show's most talked about new products.

Born of a desire to give shooters a compact, easy-to-conceal .45, the XD-S features a slim, single-stack design that's only one-inch in width. Its trigger has a short travel and a short reset to keep you on target, and the snag free sights make it holster friendly. The XD-S also comes with two interchangeable backstraps, letting shooters custom fit their grip, and the picatinny rail is just asking to be given an accessory.

In short, the XD-S delivers everything that has made the XD so popular (and then some) in a smaller package. Oh, and it's still chambered in the most popular defensive caliber of all time. If that's not deserving of a Gun of the Week nod, nothing is.

Technical Specifications:

Caliber: .45 ACP
Frame: Black Polymer
Slide: Forged Steel
Capacity: 5+1
Overall Length: 6.3"
Width: 1"
Height: 4.4"
Weight: 21.5 ozs.

I just bought the XD S .45. Jammed 1st round straight out of the box. Put the magazine in, pulled the slide back and it jammed. I fired 45 rounds and it missfired 5 times. I would have to push the slide forwrd to get it to fire. I am stuck with this pistol. I would be ashamed to sell this to someone.

Bought my XDs in Feb 2013 - LOVE IT! Ran ball, JHP, & +P with no problems. Very accurate. Carry in a Remora IWB, and is invisible in jeans & a T-shirt. Gotta convince the wifey to get her ccw so I can justify buying the 9mm XDs... [;]-)

I bought an XDS and could not get it to feed properly - first round kept jamming. After talking to the factory and sendng it back for a check it turns out that the problem is that you must have the slide locked open when inserting the first mag. You cannot insert th emag and then jack in the first round because when you do that the mag does not go all the way in - there is a perceptible gap. It also needs to be lubed more than i am used to with my Glock 21 and SIG 226. However it is surprising ly accurate for such a short barrel and as others have noted after you shoot 50+ rounds the deep checkering starts to irritate your hands. I have now put through about 150 rounds and will see how it holds up wityh more. Right now I rate it a B+

I have owned an XD 9mm for 4 yrs and have run several thousand rds through it. I have had less than 5 FTE's. I blame them on junk ammo (alum cases). I just bought a new XDS. The first rd jammed on entry, after that OK. I blew thru 50 rds with no probs. Shoots great, easier to handle than expected. The grip could be a little softer, it starts to dig in after 50 rds, of course it was only 25 degrees out, so that doesnt help with hand comfort! Other than that its great.

After careful consideration, and comparison to many different concealed carry weapons from Glock, S&W Shield, XDs and Beretta Nano, I have just purchased the XDs .45... Best decision ever. The quality, accuracy, and dependability of the XDs surpasses the others by a mile. I don't care if it is made in Croatia! Great weapon! Keep up the good work!

I have one. dealer did not have one. ordered it and filled out the paperwork. came in in a week. paperwork was back, went in and picked it up. put 100 rounds of hardball through it and 10 critical defense. I like it. Did not seem to kick any more than my 1911 full size.

I've had my xds for about 3 months now. Never had any problems and wouldn't consider carrying anything else. This is certainly a winner.

I just bought the XDs & first round jammed in the breach. Next, the slide release lever couldn't be budged. My thumb was raw trying to get it moved. Shot a foot low at 12 yds. Sent it back to factory. Hope they can fix the problems.

About the sign 'MADE IN CROATIA' and the author reffering to it.I'am Croat from the listed state and things being produced here are of some degree of quality.Get over it.The gun is designed and produced in Croatia (original) primarily for military use (extreme conditions) and is being sold under Springfield due to the joint venture between the named and croatian manufacturer.I met a lot of Americans through military service but non as nearly as short minded as the author of the comment.Visit sometimes, surprise yourself, learn something....

I've heard mixed results on this gun. Seems that some of the XDS units out in the field are experiencing problems with stove piping, scratches and dings on the extractor port and misfires. This seems to happen when the gun is new, straight out of the box or after about 200 rounds. Springfield says customers need to lube the gun a little more to correct the problem but I'm not convinced yet that this is a user problem.... I think I'm just going to wait and see for a few months before I go out and purchase the Springfield XDS. I must say however that so far I've been very happy with my Springfield XD and XDM line.......

Had my XDs for a month now and love it. Shoots well , no issues and compact size make it perfect to carry even in light FL wardrobe. If you really NEED 8 get the 7-round extended mag

I love my XD .40 & have NEVER had any kind of issues with it whatsoever. It's never jammed or misfired once in the 8 years I've owned it. My Kahr on the other hand I'm not so happy with & as soon as I can find an XD-S it will replace my Kahr. As for the palm safety, if it's that big of a deal to you then pick up a Hogue handall grip. They're about $8 on Amazon & would keep you from having to use electrical tape.

I just picked one up this past weekend. I put 50 rounds through it. It is accurate and nice to shoot. No heavy recoil like you would expect from a compact .45.

Just put several hundred round mix of; Federal, Blazer,Winchester,Remington, and Magtech JHP and FMJ with no issues. My hands are average to large and had no grip problem. It is a joy to shoot. Let me think now.... .45cal 5+1 in this remarkable little baby...conceal carry...if you can find one, get it.

I now have 4 XD/XDm Pistols including the XDs. Frankly I don't care if the weapon is made on the Moon as long as it is accurate and reliable. I have over 5K rds through these guns, mostly. 45acp and not one FTF or FTE. .and they all shoot to point of Aim. Springfield is an American Co.The XDs is a fine addition.

I don't care for the PLASTIC guns and glad I got the Springfield MICRO-COMPACT in 45 acp. A little heaver but in the compact size it helps with the recoil.

Meh, if they made it without the grip safety I might be interested. I guess I could wrap electrical tape around the grip and not have to worry about it not disengaging in a life or death situation. Nah, I just won't get one.

Croation junk? I agree with Robert Parton. My XD 40 Tactical(5") shoots extremely well. This is a gun worth buying. May be my next. Hand fit is awesome compared against a Glock which I believe are over rated. This guy, Guy. Yeah, get over it man.

I looked at a XD-S my local gun shop has as a range gun for rental. I have not had much success with compact .45s partly with how the recoil jams my wrist and affects my hold on the grip. I will definitly shoot this range gun and determine if I am going to spend my money on it. Interstingly, I have an M&P Shield 40 and the recoil impulse on that is more like a +P 9mm and gives me no trouble with wrist pain. I have owned every model of Kahrs in .45 and have traded every one back.

Robert Parton wrote:

"Croatian junk"? My XDm .40 has better than 2K rounds through it, never a FTF or FTE. Shoots straighter than I can, only pistol that comes with Match Grade barrel. At CHL class the only weapon on the range with problems was the Glock, so get over your self, dude.
