My Decision to Carry

My Decision to Carry

12/15/2011

I obtained my first CWP back in the mid ‘90s in Mississippi. This was during the early stage of the Brady Bill, so at the time I wanted the permit more for purchasing a firearm than carrying one, as Mississippi allowed CWP holders to forego NICS check. In fact, there were only a few occasions when I actually carried a handgun on my person that didn’t involve hunting or horseback riding.

I spent years being allowed to carry a handgun, but almost never doing so. But to be honest, at that point of my life it was probably better that I didn’t carry. I was in my mid 20s, single and still a little immature in many ways—hitting too many bars and drinking way too many barley pops.

It wasn’t until I was living in South Carolina that I decided to start carrying on a daily basis. And no, I didn’t have a close call that made me rethink my carrying practices. I had simple grown up and made a conscious decision that there are bad people in this world, and there needs to be others with the means and wherewithal to stand up to them. I knew I had the wherewithal, so I only needed the means. And since I believe in bringing agun to a knife fight, there was only one option open for my needs.

Of course, this decision meant I had to make some changes in parts if my life, such as how I dressed, where I could go and even where I ate, but that is for later. For now, why did you decide to carry concealed?

Like others have mentioned-age. I'm getting older and couldn't woop anyone! But I also live out in the country in a poor county. I just plain feel safer and since Wi. FINALLY legalized concealed carry, I became one of the first to exercise my 2nd ammendment rights. I'm also teaching my wife to shoot, firearms safety, and just about every aspect of firearm safety. My years as a Hunter Education Instructor have helped with the training.

I have studied martial art for years but there is no better means of self defense then a gun.

It is also easier to deal with a vicious dog if you have the option to shoot it.

I obtained my ccw 12 years ago when I moved to GA, a gun friendly state, Coming from the anti gun northern state where rattlesnakes had more rights to protection than I did. I started my own business which is mostly a cash business and live in a small southern city within alot of gang gun violence. Well it only seemed natural to start to carry. Guns were not new to me I'm ex-military and early in my youth I was in law enforcement. I believe in the individuals right to self defense. While my favorite carry is a 4" 1911, I have since acquired several relovers and autos to better adapt to the weather and activity I maybe engaged in. I joined the NRA, became a training instructor, both of my sons are apprentice instructors soon to be instructors themselves. My goal is to become a counselor. Today I take every opportunity to educate about firearms and encourage others to become ccw's. I donate my time to boy scouts and other civic groups interested in the shooting sports and firearm safety and regulary conduct womwn's only classes.

I also am glad I chose not to carry a handgun in my days of immature thinking. Being a Vietnam combat vet didn't make me a genius when it came to guns! Realizing gunpowder and alcohol were a very bad mix allowed me to choose sobriety as a way of life. It wasn't until then I bought myself a S&W model 657 .41 magnum handgun, and others since. My carry is an M&P comp .357 sig.

I have carried off and on for 45 years, because of different jobs I've held. 6 years ago, I decided to get a permit that is mine, not an employer's. I am now an NRA Training Counselor, so I also teach both students seeking a CCW, and the instructor's.

After working in the US Govt for 31 years in both Law Enforcement and Security positions I have seen people at their worse and the results of what "bad people" do. I carry most of the time for protection from man or beast that may seek to harm me.

I have a family, I believe bad people exist, and I frequent remote mountainous places as well as bustling businesses. I am lucky enough to live in a shall issue county, but I work for the state in a civil tech capacity where policy prevents my workplace carry. I carry often, and am on code red alert when I don't, but I make a point to have something to leverage an advantage when I don't... I support our rights and as a certified instructor i've offered basic instruction to those that stand on the other side, but no takers to date...

I've had my conceal carry license for sometime now. Although, when I first got it, I rarely carried my weapon. Then when the recession hit, senseless crimes increased in our small city of 100m +. So I started packing so to say and exercising my legal and constitutional rights. Although I have not been in and pray that I'm never in a position to defend myself, my family or someone else, I rest assured through my training and abilities I am ready if it does.

My wife and I both started carrying 24/7 except where legally prohibited when Texas passed CHL in 1995-96. We narrowly escaped a carjacking and decided to always be armed in the future.

Twice in my life i ahve been the victim of unprovoked total stranger atacks. Both left me with life long. life atering injuries. At that time concealed carry was not a legal option. I was out numbered and they had baseball bats, seemingly just out for "a bit of fun" I now carry always, hope I never need it, but I practice weekly, as I did in the Army, and will now have a "fighting chance". The truth is there are and have always been violent felons on the loose, just a matter of time till your path crosses theirs. Carry, always to defend yourslef and those you value.

Like one of the previous commenters, I have reached an age where I am not as strong, nor as fast as I once was. Because I travel a lot for my work, I now carry daily. A weapon at my side might give me an edge in that unlikely confrontation.

I actually began to carry for two reasons. The first is just because I can. After growing up in Kalifornia (Specifically anti-gun Los Angeles), it was an opportunity that I just couldn't pass up when I retired and moved to Arizona. The second is that I'm at an age (70) that puts me at an increased risk of being a target for muggers, etc. although I don't carry all of the time.
