Behind Survival Trial

Back in February, I had the opportunity to attend one of the most interesting events I’ve ever seen: Survival Trial III: Winterborn.

Held at the NRA Whittington Center, Survival Trial is an adventure race where two-person teams use urban and rural survival skills to compete in challenges.

While I’ve already featured Survival Trial in a blog and a photo gallery—also look for the upcoming feature article in Shooting Illustrated—organizer Jon Weiler sent me a recently uploaded YouTube video on Survival Trial. He sent it because it shows parts of my interview with him before the event. It also shows an interesting behind-the-scenes look at the work required for an event of this magnitude.

If you’ve ever wanted a challenge, you should consider Survival Trial. However, you had better start looking now; it fills up really quickly.

Below is the view from the mountains around the Whittington Center, which is part of the Survival Trial arena.

Been there, done that. It's called U.S. Marine Corps Cold Weather Training Battalion, Pickle Meadows, California. When I was in, Viet Nam was just a spot on the map. The Marines were fairly certain we would be tromping around the mountains of North Korea pretty soon, so everyone headed overseas to WestPac went up to Pickle Meadows for fun and games at high altitude.
