I remember 1973 well. I had this former-professional-football-player-turned biology teacher who put a snake in a cheerleader’s purse one day. She shrieked, jumped from her seat, raised imaginary pompoms and cried, “Yeah team, fight, fight, fight.” The snake was unimpressed, but the display burned into my brain the power of autonomic reflexes, muscle memory, and I never missed another of my high school’s football games.

One afternoon, a 37-year-old mother of two heard a knock at the front door of her home. At first, the woman assumed the visitor was a solicitor and told her 9-year-old twins not to answer. When the knocking continued and the door bell began ringing repeatedly, the woman called her husband at work.

The producers just couldn’t stand it anymore, I guess. This week’s Top Shot entered the house multiple times to show the competitors discussing various issues—I still only want to see shooting—and even baking brownies. It was probably to show that two people who actually got along well were going head to head to send one home. At least they didn’t try to invent drama for the sake of drama, and nobody has shown signs of being a queen.

Your father was probably the one who got you started in shooting, yet you’re trolling the bargain bins in discount stores this week, hoping to find something inexpensive that will satisfy his insatiable appetite for dust-collecting knickknacks. My father’s attic was home to two-dozen Chia pets, an uneaten five-pound gummy bear and a pet rock collection currently the subject of a U.S. Geological Survey all-points-bulletin. All were misguided gifts for the avid outdoorsman and shooter.

Charlie Blackmore was driving home around 4 a.m. when he spotted a woman being assaulted along the side of the road. A man had pushed her to the ground and was kicking her repeatedly in the head and stomach. Blackmore stopped his car and ordered the man to stop the attack.

For some reason, I have lately been reflecting on a lifetime of shooting, which includes the fine gun people I’ve met and the great gun places I have visited. I found both in the old San Francisco Gun Exchange. The store has been out of business since September of ’99, but it was an iconic institution for the 52 years preceding that unhappy date. Those who study marketing would be well advised to examine the way that grand old store was run. They had what you needed (as well as most competing products), their sales people knew a great deal about the product and the sale was completely honest and above board. It was a dignified, yet cordial atmosphere, and for most of the five-plus decades the SFGE was in business, owner Nate Posner worked hard to keep it that way.

In a recent home assault, a homeowner fought off two armed assailants without receiving an injury. According to the news report, the Lafayette, La., man stopped the attackers at the door by exchanging gunfire with the pair.
