The Armed Citizen® August 2010

July 14, 2010

*In February an NRA-supported federal law went into effect permitting people who may legally carry firearms to do so in many previously gun-free national parks. Three months later, a backpacker chose to exercise the new right while hiking in Alaska’s Denali National Park.

There's a new product on the market, one that's quickly wormed its way into my affection—QuickStrips.

Seecamp Pocket Pistols

July 09, 2010

Louis Seecamp was an ingenious gun designer from a family of gunmakers. Over the years, he worked on a lot of gun matters, but settled into double-action conversions for .45s in the days when there were no such things available on the open market.

Gun Book: Ammo Encyclopedia

July 07, 2010

As much as I am fond of old classic gun books, I also enjoy modern ones when they present themselves. One of the best I have seen in several years is Mike Bussard's “Ammo Encyclopedia,” published by Blue Books Publications.

The .45 Auto Rim

July 01, 2010

I am endlessly fascinated with the .45 Auto Rim cartridge developed by the Peters Cartridge Co. during the 1920s. The cartridge was designed to be used in.45 ACP revolvers made during World War I.

SCAR Not Cancelled, Only Mk 16

June 29, 2010

Yesterday’s inside word on the SCAR program came just as the news broke over the weekend that SOCOM would not be buying any more of the 5.56 mm version (SCAR-L Mk 16) but would instead allocate those funds to the 7.62 mm version (SCAR-H Mk 17). These basically translate into layman’s terms as .223 Rem. and .308 Win. caliber versions.

The Armed Citizen® July 2010

June 23, 2010

*When Michael Lish returned home to find the back door and a window ajar, he entered cautiously with his handgun for protection. As he inspected his home, a man dressed in dark clothing and wielding a sword sprung out at him. Police say the burglar threatened Lish and walked toward him. Lish fired a shot, wounding the burglar who fell to his knees. The burglar reached behind his back in an apparent attempt to grab another weapon, forcing Lish to fire two more shots, killing him. The burglar, who was on probation at the time of his death, was also carrying two illegally possessed guns, a knife and a stun gun. (Tulsa World, Tulsa, OK, 04/03/2010)
