The Henry Repeating Arms Mare's Leg

More than 50 years ago, Steve McQueen appeared on television sets across the country as Josh Randall, lead character of “Wanted: Dead or Alive,” a program that aired on CBS for three seasons. The show's most enduring legacy is the unique sidearm carried by its hero, which the writers eventually christened the “Mare’s Leg.”

The program’s original Mare’s Leg was created by cutting down a Winchester Model 1892 rifle to a size that could be worn in a leg holster and used with one hand. The barrel was shortened, and the buttstock nearly eliminated. A number of companies have released their own versions of the design—and it's the Mare's Leg produced by Henry Repeating Arms that we feature here in our latest addition to the Gun of the Week series.

Learn more about Henry's take on the Mare's Leg in the video below, hosted by Associate Online Editor Shawn Skipper.

A lever-action pistol? It may look cool, but the gun has no practical use.

I guess I don't get it. Loved the TV show, but like a pistol grip on a .12 gauge, it only works on film. Seems like the worst of all worlds, a handgun that is impossibly large, or a rifle that cannot be properly aimed.

I bought the Rossi Mare's Leg in 38/357 a month ago. It shoots okay, but I'm still breaking it in. I do look forward to seeing which calibers of this style rifle Henry comes out with.
