Beretta ARX100

Beretta made waves when it rolled out its new ARX100 at the 142nd NRA Annual Meetings & Exhibits, and our editors were excited to get their hands on one. The rifle is equipped with a cold hammer forged barrel that can be removed and replaced with various lengths and calibers in a matter of seconds—the first two configurations available are 5.56 and .300 AAC Blackout.

The gun sports a constant contact piston system, allowing it to easily feed and fire, even under the most unforgiving conditions. Its lightweight, technopolymer receiver allows for reliable operation, with little lubricant.

Better yet, the ARX100 is completely ambidextrous. All of the firearm's critical controls can be adapted to suit a left-handed shooter—and a selector near the rear of the gun allows the user to switch between left or right spent casing ejection configurations.

Finally a 5.56/.223 rifle that a lefty can buy that's not obscurely special and hard to find, and under $2000! For you Beretta haters: S&W is in MA. Armalite and Springfield is in IL. Winchester, Ruger, Colt, and Hodgon is in CT. Glocks are made in Austria with more stringent laws than any in the US. You going to boycot all of these companies too?

It appears that the receiver is like their 9mm rifle, made of junk plastic. The flimsy plastic sights are a real joke. I do like the quick change barrel provision but how accurate is this gun and what is the trigger pull like? How long is the barrel and what twist does it have?

I remember seeing this rifle for the first time in several ShotShow videos over a year ago. I'm surprised you guys are just now covering this masterpiece. Such a beautiful and versatile rifle. If you want a good ShotShow video of it, search 'Baretta set to embarrass ACR' by nutnfancy on youtube. I believe that is an earlier prototype model (ARX 160) in that video, but it's still very informative and fun to watch. Skip about halfway through the video to get to the part with the ARX160, the first half contains other Baretta products.

I had handled one recently, I was not overly impressed with it, as it felt a bit flimsy to me. It is probably a decent rifle, but that's me, I like to have something very solid in my hands personally. I find interesting hwoever, that Beretta did apply a gas piston to their new rifle, and that along sets it apart from the direct gas system the AR/M-16 has. I had used the M-16 rifle in its various incarnations through my time in services, and I had never had any trouble with the ones I used, but it would have been nice to have that gas piston. Like I had with the old AR-180 I had at home. Berettas offering I'm afraid is to expensive for what it is, and for roughly around that same amount of money I would go with the new Remington ACR, as I had handled one of those and liked its features and the solid feel it had.

Being a Maryland resident, I will never again pay for a Beretta product. This past year, when the liberal Maryland government past it's draconian assault weapons ban, Beretta initially appeared to stand by its customers, putting pressure on the legislature to vote against the ban. Once the ban passed, Beretta regrettably decided to maintain its headquarters in Maryland instead of taking advantage of the numerous invitations they received from states that stand by our Second Amendment rights. Beretta has allied themselves with the liberals, and I will not buy from them.
