Ruling on the Judge

Mr. Clapp

I am considering buying a Judge for general household protection and occasional grouse shooting. I am interested in pure function only for this pistol. Are these worth having? I understand they come in a 3" - 6.5" barrel, and are chambered in 2.5" and 3". Give an opinion in you would. Thanks. J.R.

Can I refer you to a story I wrote about the Judge on AmericanRifleman.org? It answers most of your questions in reqards to the Judge revolver. It is a big, heavy brute, but would make a great home defense handgun.

I would strongly recommend the gun with the 3-inch barrel and long cylinder that takes 3-inch .410 shells. Also, my load of choice is the Winchester five-pellet #000 load. This shell delivers five .36 caliber pellets, each weighing 73 grains, at a velocity of about 1,000 feet per second on to a dinner plate all the way out to 10 yards. It is a specialty gun that works well for home defense.

There is need for an article on handloading for the Judge. Loads in my mmanual and articles range from 15900 to 25000 cup. What is working pressure for the Judge? Serious problem: Specs have the case at 1.285". My fired WW and RP Brass can be trimmed to that, but Hornaday brass is 0.05 too short. This means resetting Expander and crimping dies. WHy did Hornaday make brass shorter than the specs?.
