The Great .380 Wars

It looks as if we are on the threshold of another battle among the giants of gunmaking. For reasons that are not entirely clear to me, there is a sharp resurgence of interest in .380 ACP pistols.

Combined with increasing numbers of CCW holders, this renewed interest has driven handgun designers to create smaller than ever versions of the .380 ACP. New designs from Kel-Tec, Ruger, Rohrbaugh, Kahr, Sig Sauer, Taurus and possibly others will be going head to head in 2009.

Almost certainly, this will stimulate interest on the part of the ammo makers and they will be cranking out elephant stopping loads for the .380, a cartridge that has slithered past the century mark in age.

Many shooters would be better served by a compact 9 mm pistol, but those guns recoil enough to pre-occupy some folk. I can't deny that the .380 compacts are easier to handle, so let's hear it for the 9x17 mms.

I have and (mostly in the summer) do carry a 380 as a defensive gun, but I prefer to carry a 45. That said it is kinda hard to conceal a 1911A1 under a T shirt and shorts! I do like the old Star 380 in that it looks and for the most part strips down the same as the 1911, as the Star is small and does have an inertial firing pin it gets carried hammer down on a loaded chamber, a quick thumbing while drawing and it's ready to go. It's not a perfect solution but as has been said, any gun is better than no gun! I also have a 25ACP I carry in the pocket when nothing else is concealable, it's loaded with Glasers so should at least make someone think twice about who to assault, I hope. Yes I feel under-gunned with both the 380 and 25, but if the choice is to carry one of them or not to carry, I'll happily carry them. Let's face it, any handgun is a compromise, to truly feel safe I'd prefer to be carrying a M-14 or a 12 Ga Pump Shotgun, but they are a bugger to conceal, so I make due........

I've been looking for a Walther PPK for nine months and have found that they are not available. Does anybody have any idea why?

I own and carry several versions of the .380. (Not all at once however). I am a retired LEO and since I am retired, I don't think I will get into a North Hollywood style shootout. IF it ever happens, it will be at extremely close range. My .380 stoked with hydroshocks should do necely. If it doesn't, I'll hand the gun to the perp and run like hell, after it's M/T of course.
