The cash register, that is. The Freedom Group has just added Dakota Arms to its pile. The Freedom Groups is a collection of gun companies being assembled by Cerberus Capital Management, a New York private equity firm that came to international prominence several years ago when it bought failing carmaker Chrysler from Daimler-Benz. So far the Freedom Group owns Remington, Bushmaster, DPMS/Panther Arms, Marlin, H&R, New England Firearms, L.C. Smith and Parker. I spoke to Scott Blackwell, chief sales officer of The Freedom Group, and he explained that their overall strategy is to offer firearms consumers a "good, better, best selection" of brands. The idea is to keep a customer within the group, from a beginning youngster with a $200 H&R .22 on up to a $6,000 Dakota. Industry insiders have said that The Freedom Group lacks only one thing to make the circle complete – a handgun maker. To which I say, bratwurst anyone?
