Check the Backseat

With so many people going out at night during this time of year, I want to remind everyone of a simple habit that could save your life—checking the backseat before getting into your car.

We see it all the time in movies and on T.V.; a person is in a rush or has something on his or her mind and just opens the car door, climbs behind the wheel and turns the key right before a friend, foe or even a maniac jumps up from behind.

I’m always surprised, and mad, when this happens because checking the backseat is such a simple thing to do. I can’t remember the last time I got in a car when I didn’t look in the backseat. I even check the backend of my regular-cab truck before getting behind the wheel, even knowing that it wouldn’t be a good idea for someone to hide back there (think hard acceleration with a brake slam).

Before heading out this year for shopping, dinner or a family gathering, make a conscious decision to pay attention to your surroundings, particularly to the backseat of your car.

Annette I'm so glad to hear that. My wife also is very good about checking the backseat, even before she met me.

I have always been taught to look in the back seat before getting into my car. Being a female you always need to know your surroundings! Now being a mother I never let the kids in the car before I check it out first and that I never go out with carrying. Be safe out there and have a great holiday season.
