Protect Your Feet

There are lot things I do and don’t do because of my self-defense philosophy. I don’t wear earphones when exercising. I always look in the backseat of my car before entering. I always observe a store before walking in to make a purchase, and I’m always aware of my surroundings and am constantly planning for situations that can occur in the location where I’m at.

While some people would call this being paranoid, I call it being prepared. I decided a long time ago that I was not going to become a victim to some degenerate who has no regard for other’s property or life. However, this tip might reach over to the paranoid side of the line.

What I’m talking about is flip flops. My hatred of flip flops is well known to my family and friends, and some of them think this might be going a little far. Yes, I do dislike the funny little clopping noise flip flops make as someone walks, but my dislike goes further. Yes, flip flops are considered to be cool and comfortable during the summer months, but they have to be the worst footwear for self-defense situations. In fact, it is my belief that flip flops actually make a person a target.

First, you can’t move quickly in flip flops. Flip flops can also easily trip you up or fly off your feet when moving quickly, limiting your fight or flight response to an attack. Second, flip flops leave your feet open to attack. An assailant can easily stomp the feet of someone in this open-toed footwear, breaking toes and limiting that person’s response. I know I have no problem stomping feet in a fight.

Substantial footwear is an important part of keeping yourself safe. While wearing real shoes, you can move away from danger or stand and fight with fist, feet or gun. Keep yourself safe by wearing real shoes or boots and leave the flip flops for what they were designed, the beach and shower.

How sad ! Most of those who commented had missed the point....

Funny, really funny. The remark about being a target is quite true, but protecting your toes from stomping is a bit far fetched. I probably won't show up to a gunfight in flip flops and I couldn't conceal a pistol over one either, but my Reef sandals can open a brew. If I try that with my 1911, I'll probably accidentally shoot myself.

Some of these comments are just plain goofy. OK Flippy the Ninja, you do that boomerang thing and see if you don't get your butt kicked. You, too, MattS. Go ahead, man. Wear your flippers while you get flopped on your tail by some thug with a .40 cal. Unless you live in an thinly populated area like I do, you would be wise to heed Paul's advice to some degree. I'm not saying wear steel toes everywhere, but decent workboots, hiking shoes/boots, even some of these newer versions of sneaks with mucho synthetico go a long way in protecting feet under trying circumstances. Foot temp. is more about the socks. May I suggest good synthetics like Smartwool? They come in every thickness, length, size, and color one can imagine. And, I, too, dislike that annoying smack against the bottoms of the feet. It's as bad as someone smacking during mealtime. Makes me want to smack them.

Paul, you are not paranoid at all...looking out for potential threats is just being 'prepared'. Being prepared feel good. Feeling good is not paranoia...I find the filthy feet of people who wear rubber flip-flops in airports and other public places to be repugnant. I just don't understand why anyone would want to wade through 1/2 an inch of the drenched slime of a public restroon with only a 3/8 inch thick piece of rubber on the bottom of their feet...

I have been wearing sandals/thongs/flipflops all my life. I can run in these. People who say you can't run in flipflops just simply don't know how and should stick to shoes. And to say that normal shoes provide complete protection from stomping is pretty ignorant. Have you felt the toe area of common shoes? All they do is protect your toes from the elements, not someone intent on breaking your toes. This guy is suggesting we all wear steel toed tactical footwear all the time. My feet burn up in fully enclosed shoes so I find myself wearing my sandals nearly everyday. Everyone is different, that's all I'm saying.

So now everyone needs to wear tactical clothing?

I to have a dislike for flip flops. In 83 or 84 I was with two friends when we drove into an area with no pavement for several miles and encountered a flash flood. to make the story short, We had a six mile walk and I was the only one with boots. My two freinds had a weary long walk in mud and gravle wearing flip flops.

Flip flops - no. But "substantial shoes" aren't necessary. I wear minimalist footwear, which allows me to move much faster and with much more agility. It also allows me to actually use my feet in a fight, to hook them around legs and such.

This is not paranoia, it's just good sense.

Good point. However, I enjoy my flip flops so much that I will continue to use them. It takes a cool dude to ignore the sound they make. If a bad guy pulls out a gun I will simply pull off my flip flop. A flip flop held in the hand and thrown like a ninja star is utter destruction. My flip flops are made of a thick, heavy, unknown material. It is the unknown that brings fear. Pretty soon all Cops will be wearing Tactical Flip Flops XD
