Savage Model 42

More than 70 years ago, Savage Arms released an over/under combination gun that partnered the .22LR cartridge with .410 bore—a move that would ultimately launch one of the company’s most iconic platforms, the Model 24.

Much to the dismay of many gun owners, the line was ultimately discontinued—though not before it had enjoyed decades of success and been expanded to feature such combinations as .30-30 Win. over a 12-gauge shot shell.

In late 2012, though, Savage offered its fans a bit of hope, thanks to the release of a reinvented version of the classic over/under: the Model 42. Though the 42 is still a single-shot, break-action rifle, much about it has changed to suit modern standards. Wow, an over/under combination gun that's chambered for .22LR and .410! Now I can go rabbit hunting with the .22, and if I come across an angry raccoon, the .410 should take care of him. Is this gun marketed towards young beginners? It does look like a toy. There was a reason they stopped making the M24 and the Springfield M6.
