Henry Repeating Arms U.S. Survival AR-7

The AR-7 has served U.S. Air Force pilots since 1959, and has developed a reputation for portability, ease of operation and reliability. Henry Repeating Arms now produces the AR-7 for the civilian world, and the well-recognized takedown .22 is the latest AmericanRifleman.org Gun of the Week.

Much like the original survival rifle, Henry's take on the AR-7 is lightweight and highly portable. When stowed, it measures just 16½" and makes for an easy fit in any backpack. Its .22LR chambering allows you to carry large quantities of ammunition without adding much weight.

You can get a closer look at the Henry Repeating Arms U.S. Survival AR-7 below, in a video hosted by American Rifleman's Brian Sheetz.

I would just like to offer a correction to information mentioned in the video. The Henry Repeating Arms production US Survival rifle will carry a total of (3) magazines when broken down for carry. (2) stow in the cavities provided and the 3rd would be inserted into the receiver as if loading the firearm. Certainly all firearm safety rules apply when handling the assemblies and some local laws may deem this to be in possession of a loaded firearm, though no round is in the chamber as the barrel is not affixed, but a loaded mag is in the action. Consult with local authorities to verify your laws. Just wanted to mention the 3rd mag carry, as it is better having 24 rounds available than 16, just in case you forget or lose the spare ammo packed away in your gear.

I'd like to see one in .223, but 9mm might be more realistic. Just beef-up the hollow butt-stock for bigger magazines and a meatier receiver.

I have the newest version that Henry redesigned...like this one! I have fired hundreds of rounds of various brands with not one jam! No FTF, no FTE, accurate, light, easy to put together and take apart, floats...whats not to like? I know the original ones were jamamatics, even the early Henry models...but this one is superb! I love mine and it is a hoot to shoot! If you have bad memories of the earlier versions, you owe it to yourself to try out one of these beauties! You will be quite impressed!

My Henry US Survival is actually pretty accurate, it just has off days where it jams up fairly frequently. It is an earlier version than the one shown, only has a spot for 1 mag, but with a scope mounted, is quite accurate.

After seeing how many of us are interested in a Magnum version I contacted Anthony Imperato who is the President of Henry Arms, and posed the question to him. He replied the next day with an email that states: 'Not possible, we studied if it could be made keeping the same design and it cannot.' So for you engineers/designers out there it looks like you have some homework to do...

Comments...Had one. Couldnt wait to dump it. Lousy sights and one of the worst triggers I've ever owned. It was however compact, easy to carry, and reliable.

This would be great in .223.

I have the old Charter Arms AR-7. It is fun and accurate to shoot. The only issue is you really need to use CCI Mini-Mags .22lr Those don't hang up the bolt and makes it much more reliable.

We kept an original AR in the airplane we owned for 30 years for the "just in case" scenarios.A great little gun . Went plinking with it at times, always worked perfectly.

Have one made by Henry. Takes up no space in truck tool box. Sights are crude, but mine is both accurate & reliable. Like everything these days, extras mags are hard to find.

I always liked AR- 7's but for $65 I would do my own camo job!

I have the Henry AR-7, You are in error when you said the magazine had to be removed. you can store the action with a magazine installed, making the total number of magazines for survival to 3, or 24 rounds. I agree with Steve. the .22 Win Mag would be a very nice option, although I am not sure the magazine would be long enough, so there may need to be a redesign for the magazine well.

I would like this in a .22 Mag.

Jonathan wrote:

should be able to do it with just a barrel change. The chamber is inside the barrel. Good idea. Nope. take that back. magazine well and magazine would need to be rebuilt. Making a .22 WMR barrel would make it a single shot (which might still be okay.)

I used to drool over these when I was a kid. How well does the plastic front sight last? Everything I ever had with a plastic front sight got dinged up so bad the sight ended up being useless. I'd LOVE one of these with all metal sights! I used to daydream for hours over this rifle!

This rifle is notorious for it's inaccuracy. Is that why he didn't show us any targets?

I agree with you, this would be a superlative weapon if it was offered in a 22 mag.

Ken wrote:

I agree with Steve....in 22 Mag, the versatility would be greatly increasd and the weight difference would be nill.

ken wrote:

yes steve im with you 22 mag would be worth the slight weight penalty

Morris Edmonds wrote:

I also would love to have one if it were 22 magnum .

Steve wrote:

If that were in .22 Mag, it would be more powerful with little weight penalty. Any possibility of that happening?
