Springfield Armory's SOCOM line offers compact and powerful close-quarter rifles—and the 7.62mm NATO chambering ensures that each model will pack quite a punch. The SOCOM II, which features a new Cluster Rail System, serves as the latest addition to the AmericanRifleman.org Gun of the Week series.

I have a vertical foregrip/bipod mounted, but stick with the iron sights. On Father's Day I took my 91 year old Dad to the range. He is a combat veteran of WWII, a platoon sgt. First time on a rifle since the war, he placed 5 shots, about a second apart each, in a three inch group at 75 yds. Said the only thing missing was a German helmet downrange. Maybe he was just being nice, but he did not criticize the rails. He liked the bipod built into the grip. He really liked the 20 round magazine. Said he could have used that in the war. He liked the short size. Carried a carbine himself, and said the maneuverability was very helpful in a foxhole, and in house to house combat. I have tremendous love and respect for this man, and going to the range with him, and seeing him shoot the way he did, was a blessing. By the way, he liked my AR too.

This is a great gun in any format, all you old crows complaining about the quad rail need to get over it, it adds options, and just because it's not made of wood doesn't mean that there is anything wrong with it. "Kids and there cell phones and quad rails!" Is it too loud for you too grandpa? great gun springfield, way to keep the m-14 alive!

Dave, my girlfriend just bought the Socom 16 at our local Cabelas (Wheeling, WV), and I do believe they've had quite a few others for the past couple weeks. In stock, right on the shelf, from the Socoms to the Scout and even the Loaded full size M1As. If you want one, I would try Cabelas. I think they go from $1800-$2000, depending on model.

You can mount a bench rest bipod on the front rail. I'm not sure many people will be hitting much the way these reviewers fired it. At 500 yards this gun is still a beast. Truth the M1A is a great gun without flashlights mounted to it.

The rifle is balanced, and rails are useful gramps. Most modern rifles have rails. This and other versions of the rifle could be found on Gunbroker a couple weeks ago when I bought mine, factory new. They were selling under MSRP, not sure about what might be there now.

No problem finding a use for 3 of 4 positions on the rails. Surefire light/foregrip at 6:00. 1X Aimpoint at 12:00. Green laser at 3:00. Works for me.

Save some money and buy the SOCOM 16. If you really want rails, buy and install a Sage EBR stock on it like mine. All in all though, I wish I had just bought the Scout rifle. 16" is just a little too short for 7.62 NATO.

The new rail system is ugly and redundant. I suspect it is also unbalanced. Previous models looked like battle rifles, not a teenager's idea of a zombie toy.
