SureFire Announces High-Capacity AR Magazines

New magazines for AR-type rifles offer 60- and 100-round capacity in a non-drum form.

12/16/2010

SureFire, traditionally known as a manufacturer of illumination accessories, has announced today that it is releasing high-capacity 60- and 100-round aluminum magazines for .223/5.56 mm NATO AR-type rifles.

Dubbed the MAG5-60 and MAG5-100, the two new magazines are designed to give military operators the ability to stay in a firefight longer. According to SureFire, with a 4-second reload time, the current standard magazine allows soldiers to fire no more than 150 rounds in 30 seconds. The MAG5-60 increases that figure to 240 rounds, and the MAG5-100 to 293 rounds.

The new high-capacity magazines feature different internal spring and follower systems to account for the 4x2 quad-stack configuration, and are designed to be more reliable than current Milspec magazines. The magazines' design also allows them to be stored indefinitely while fully loaded, which means individual units could be issued fully-loaded magazines instead of supply crates of empty magazines and ammunition cans.

Both the MAG5-60 and MAG5-100 can be disassembled for periodic cleaning, and will be shipping in March, 2011, with the MAG5-60 retailing for $129 and the MAG5-100 for $179.

I'll get one, even though I'm 70 years-old. My sons will probably fight over it when I die, particularly to the infantry son in the USMC with four tours in Iraq.

For the price of the 60, you can get 13 PMAGs. So, for the money, you want 390 shots capacity or 60?

When will it end?! I'm a former FBI&NYS Certified Police Firearms Instructor with considerable military weapons experience. I'm sure that if we work on it,we can get the useless M4 carbines and clones up to 15 lbs. I can see giving each soldier one of these super capacity mags, being sure to issue them a special pouch to carry it on MOLLE gear. But except for assault teams that are not encumbered with 100lbs of equipment and special operators who need superior firepower when executing a dynamic withdrawl, all I see are more burned out barrels and wasted money. After raining on your parade, this old fashioned retired peace officer wishes to congratulate you on what must be quite an engineering achievement. I'm sure that I will buy one of each to join all the other toys that I don't need and will probably never use! I'd also like to state that I am a fan of your flashlights, as your 6P LED rides in our nighttable and in each of our three vehicles. Thanks for giving me this chance to gab, Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to all at Surefire. P.S. Sure wish I never sold that original Colt SP1, 20" bbl for velocity, 6.5lbs for weight! All it needed was better handguards and flashsuppressor plus, unfortunately, a forward assist. Regards, Bumper
