Hornady & CMP Launch Vintage Sniper Rifle Match

The ammunition manufacturer has teamed up with the Civilian Marksmanship Program to introduce a high-speed, team-oriented match that marries history and skill.

Popular ammunition manufacturer Hornady has teamed up with the Civilian Marksmanship Program to introduce a Vintage Sniper Rifle Match for the National Rifle Championships to be held at Camp Perry in 2011.

The match permits competitors to use only a select set of U.S. and foreign service rifles with period-appropriate optics. Each two-man team, consisting of a shooter and an observer, is allowed only 20 seconds of target exposure before the targets are pulled into the pits for 20 seconds, then exposed for another 20 seconds. This places an emphasis on team communication under the stresses of time constraint.

Dave Emary, Chief Ballistic Scientist for Hornady Manufacturing, came up with the idea for the match several years ago as a way to incorporate popular vintage sniper rifles in national competition. Currently the rifles have no official competitive format. The new match trophy will be called the J.W. Hornady Memorial Trophy for Camp Perry. Hornady will custom load match ammunition in some rare vintage calibers specifically for the event, including 6.5x55 mm, .303 British, 7.62x54R and 8x57 mm.

    Check out the competition section of the CMP website: http://odcmp.com/Competitions.htm Sniper matches will be held at the Eastern/Western Games as well as the National Matches at Camp Perry.

    I can't find either and I really want to find out more information on this event.

    I've searched every way I know how through the Hornady site and the CMP site for information on the sniper match. If it's there, it's buried.
