Since its founding in 2006, the Jeff Cooper Legacy Foundation has awarded scholarships, in the form of paid tuition to Gunsite Academy’s introductory 250 Defensive Pistol class (gunsite.com), to 34 recipients—and the foundation is now accepting applications for lucky number 35. Founded to preserve, protect and defend the principle of self-reliance and the individual right of self-defense, as espoused by Col. Cooper, the foundation is funded entirely through private donations. Worth a total of $1,585, the scholarship covers the cost of the class; however, the recipient will need to provide his or her own firearm, ammunition and equipment, and is also responsible for any transportation, meal and boarding costs. Dave Bates, a former recipient of the scholarship who is also an elementary school principal in southwestern Pennsylvania, called Gunsite’s 250 Defensive Pistol class an ”incredible experience that would be worthwhile to any shooter of any experience level.” The application, which involves an essay portion, is available on the foundation’s website, and scholarship recipients are selected by the foundation’s board of directors. jeffcooperfoundation.org
