While I’ve never been a devoted user of Facebook, I do occasionally log on to keep up with family and friends. I’ve also discovered that a lot of useful tips get passed on through social media, including this one for finding a lost child when at a major public event.

With only 12 shooters left in the house, Top Shot producers brought back a popular challenge from Seasons One and Two. In what I’m calling dropping dice, the competitors split into teams captained by two of my favorite shooters—Kelly and Jamie—to compete head-to-head with the Remington New Army 1875.

Now that the persistent chill has finally released it grip, more people are working to eliminate those extra pounds that developed over the winter through walking and running. While this is great for overall health, folks need to remember to keep themselves safe when out for cardio enjoyment.

This season’s Top Shot continues to be all about the shooting at the range, rather than the drama in the house, or in Colby’s words: “All star, all skill season.” That’s fine with me, and pretty much everyone I’ve spoken to about Top Shot recently agrees. Who cares about how these people get along? Just show me some really cool firearms and make the competitors take some crazy shots.

The producers just couldn’t stand it anymore, I guess. This week’s Top Shot entered the house multiple times to show the competitors discussing various issues—I still only want to see shooting—and even baking brownies. It was probably to show that two people who actually got along well were going head to head to send one home. At least they didn’t try to invent drama for the sake of drama, and nobody has shown signs of being a queen.

In a recent home assault, a homeowner fought off two armed assailants without receiving an injury. According to the news report, the Lafayette, La., man stopped the attackers at the door by exchanging gunfire with the pair.

Last week, I, along with a few other editors from NRA Publications, had the opportunity to meet with representatives from FNH USA at the Peacemaker National Training Center in Gerrardstown, W.Va., to get some hands-on time with a few of the company’s newer firearms, along with a couple of its more popular platforms—the SCAR and the Five-seveN.

With 16 former competitors vying to be the best, Top Shot All Stars has begun. It was nice to see that the show returned for a fifth season, since rumor had the show slipping into oblivion due to the high costs of making the show—the high speed cameras that provide all that awesome bullet-entering-target footage are not cheap.

Many don’t realize it, but shooting is a perishable skill that must be continuously renewed through practice and training. Every expert recommends regular range time to both improve and maintain accuracy and the skills needed to ward off a deadly attack. This is constantly proven by the thousands of rounds fired every year by competitors to stay at the top of their fields.

The best self-defense tool to come out since the handgun is the cell phone. Hear me out before you start screaming or burning me in effigy, OK? Believe me, I was one of the last holdouts on cell phones because I pictured an electronic collar, tracking me, knowing everywhere I went. But regardless of my paranoia issues, I now consider a cell phone as second in importance of daily carry gear. No. 1 is my Kimber.
