Celebrity endorsements are commonly used to sell everything from wristwatches to coffee pots, but for a variety of reasons (which I’ll discuss in a moment) famous faces rarely appear in promotional roles in the gun industry. A notable exception is R. Lee Ermey, the hard-bitten drill instructor from Full Metal Jacket better known to all of us as "The Gunny."

It's pretty much a given that savvy police officers often carry a second handgun to back up their primary service auto. I believe that the second gun needs to be very similar to the primary in its handling and operation. In my day, this requirement was most commonly manifested with a Model 19 (or 15) in the holster with a 2-inch Model 36 (or 42) in hiding. Under stress, the similar loading, handling and firing was very comforting. But now that the police service revolver is pursuing the Dodo bird, this practice seems to be falling into disuse. It doesn't need to. In fact, there is more reason than ever to pair up the service handgun with a hideout pistol of the same make and/or similar handling.

There are a lot of cops in this country and every one of them carries a modern handgun of some kind. Most of these guns are seldom fired, but carried habitually, and these guns are updated with new models every few years.

In honor of its 25th anniversary in the U.S., Glock is putting out a special edition pistol that features a crest inside the grip. The limited-edition Glock is a G17, 4th generation model in 9mm that features a branded slide and frame emblazoned with the words, "25 Years of Glock Perfection USA." In all, only 2,500 will be manufactured.

Try as I may to think of something comparable, I can’t come up with anything to match the staggering surge in popularity of the AR-platform rifle over the past few years. Glock comes to mind, but the Austrian polymer gun took at least a decade (starting in 1985) to solidly grab the law enforcement handgun market. The 1911 is another possibility, but the growth in sales of Old Slab Sides has been incremental, not like the recent rocket of the AR.

While some 72,000 NRA members enjoyed a grand time of browsing the many guns and accessories on display at last week’s NRA Annual Meetings & Exhibits in Charlotte, N.C., the Insider was hanging out at the water cooler. I corralled some of my best industry contacts and caught up on the latest inside gossip.
