And the Winner Is…

After a long season that was relatively free of drama, one contestant showed he had the skills, speed, endurance and drive to become History’s Top Shot. He also won $100,000 and a Tahoe Q5i Speedboat.

Dirty Dozen

By Paul Rackley

With only 12 shooters left in the house, Top Shot producers brought back a popular challenge from Seasons One and Two. In what I’m calling dropping dice, the competitors split into teams captained by two of my favorite shooters—Kelly and Jamie—to compete head-to-head with the Remington New Army 1875.

A Great Way to Go Home

By Paul Rackley

This season’s Top Shot continues to be all about the shooting at the range, rather than the drama in the house, or in Colby’s words: “All star, all skill season.” That’s fine with me, and pretty much everyone I’ve spoken to about Top Shot recently agrees. Who cares about how these people get along? Just show me some really cool firearms and make the competitors take some crazy shots.

Match Up Among Friends

By Paul Rackley

The producers just couldn’t stand it anymore, I guess. This week’s Top Shot entered the house multiple times to show the competitors discussing various issues—I still only want to see shooting—and even baking brownies. It was probably to show that two people who actually got along well were going head to head to send one home. At least they didn’t try to invent drama for the sake of drama, and nobody has shown signs of being a queen.

Tied-Up Final

By Iain Harrison

This week's finale opened with the competitors returning to the house to be welcomed by a pretty lavish spread. Up till this point, people cook for themselves or their team mates, but the final four get treated to a meal that's put together by the set caterers and a celebratory bottle of booze makes its way into the house.

A Really Long Shot

By Iain Harrison

There is so much that goes on behind the scenes when the filming an episode of Top Shot, such as obtaining experts to train the competitors. When Kelly was first approached by History to return as an expert on long range shooting, he naturally wanted to know what would be expected of him in order to put in the necessary research. Being the good engineering student that he is, his first order of business was to get some time behind an Accuracy International rifle, which meant a trip down from Seattle to see me. I’ve occasionally mentioned the unofficial TS alumni network—this was one of those instances where it came into play.

Guns, Shooting And Reality

After determining there would be little in the way of actual survival skills portrayed and absolutely no cannibalism on “Survivor,” I had little interest in reality television. But while I am still unlikely to voluntarily watch the “Real Housewives of Anywhere,” and could not give a whit about Snooky’s angst or what a Kardasian does or does not wear, I have changed my mind. And that’s because reality television has changed to include things that interest me and those like me.
