An abused J. Stevens single-shot, break-open 12-gauge holds of place of honor today, and receives more attention than the SIG Sauer M400, Beretta Storm Carbine, Kimber 84 and Remington 700 that share the vault. I knew it could never be, but somehow I’d hoped it would always be with Dad, proudly hanging on the den wall like it did when I was growing up, visually teasing friends until they’d finally inquire about the old gun and sit hypnotized as my father shared hunting tales from the Great Depression.

Instructors spend hours trying to drive home muzzle control in to students. Most understand why muzzle control is so important and continuously try to not “sweep” themselves or others with the muzzle of their guns. However, there is a drill that causes many shooters, even experienced shooters, to sweep themselves without even realizing what they’ve done.

I handle guns all the time and sometimes find my attitude becoming a little overly-familiar. Since I know that familiarity breeds contempt, I periodically take a look at the sign above my working desk and reflect on the wisdom thereon.
