SureFire’s MAG5-60

Passing by the desk where packages come into American Rifleman, I spied a small box from Fountain Valley, Calif.—the home of SureFire. Usually such packages contain a new variation on the firm’s superlative flashlights; I initially paid little heed to the box. But the grin on Shooting Illustrated’s Executive Editor Adam Heggenstaller’s face told me that “it”—or rather “they”—had arrived, as he has one, too. It’s the SureFire MAG5-60, a high-capacity magazine that fits the AR-style platform and provides 60-round capacity reliably out of a single magazine. SureFire’s Ron Canfield assured us these magazines were off the first production line.

Let There Be Light

After posting my last blog on My Home Gun, I was asked by a reader whether I preferred to have the light attached to my gun or held in my support hand. My answer to this question is yes.

My Home Gun

While some shooters have an all-around gun for both concealed-carry and home defense, I prefer to have separate handguns for specific purposes. While there is nothing wrong with having one gun for both—this ensures you know this handgun intimately—I favor my home-defense gun to be set up exactly how I want without having to attach or remove accessories when I arrive or leave home. This also allows me to secure my home-defense firearm in the same location at all time.

Illumination

As an infantry guy, I called for illumination quite often. It usually came from mortars or howitzers, but occasionally from naval gunfire or aerial flares. As a cop, I used my big 4-cell Kel-Lite far more than my Model 19. And as the saying goes, you can't fight 'em if you can't see 'em. Of all the possible accessories to a good fighting handgun you could possibly buy, one of the most important is an effective light. It's so important that the synonym for flashlight in the tactical sense is “target identifier.” There's a vast liability issue awaiting the police officer or even armed citizen who lets fly with old Betsy without positively identifying the target, but that's only part of the handgunner's need for a good light.
