Even though I started as a skeptic, I became a fan of lasers after trying them a few years ago. Since then I’ve attached lasers from various manufacturers to five handguns and one rifle, and can’t believe that I ever doubted their need.

Green lasers have staked out a respectable position in the market over the last few years, enough so that even Crimson Trace—which, not surprisingly, has traditionally been a red laser company—took notice. Crimson Trace produced its first green lasers sometime ago, but took things to another level at SHOT Show 2013 by releasing green versions of the company's well-known lasergrips. For the first time ever, green lasers will be paired with instinctive activation technology.

While there is no doubt that lasers are great tools for self-defense, there is a bit of an argument about instant-on versus push-button control. Some shooters prefer Crimson Trace because the laser activates when you grip the handgun, while others favor more control over the activation of the laser like the control button on LaserMax lasers.

While swapping the Lightguard from my Kimber to my Colt, I discovered that Crimson Trace’s listing as it is for Kimber, Ruger and Smith & Wesson 1911s was accurate. The trigger guard on my Colt is just slightly too thick.

Last year, I had an opportunity to try out the Crimson Trace Lightguard at Gunsite in a variety of night exercises. At the time, the only handgun that the new Lightguard was available for was the Smith & Wesson M&P. While there, a few of us writer types asked when a Lightguard would be coming for 1911 handguns. The only answer we received from Crimson Trace representative Iain Harrison was a smile, which we took as it was coming; he just wasn’t sure when.

Crimson Trace Corp. announced that its first green laser will be available in the third quarter of 2012 and will be implemented with the existing Lightguard platform. In the second phase of the green-laser inroduction, which will occur in 2013, brand-new technology will be employed to shrink the diode and provide it in the same size package as the existing laser. Learn more in this video of Iain Harrison as he demonstrates the laser and explains why you should give it a try.
