I've purchased a few of the new Winchesters: 2 1886s and an 1892 and they shoot and function better than the originals. With the exception of the tang safety, I would say that these are truly terrific rifles and are better built than the originals. The actions are as smooth as glass, right out of the box and they are dead on accurate.

I bought one of the last 'Made in USA' Model 94s. It is a .357 magnum Trails End, Color Case frame and hexagonal barrell. The finish on the lever is very rough and the rifle is very sensitive to ammunition. mis-feeding is common. On the other hand I also have a Model 1895 take down in .30-'06. Made in Japan. The color case finish is superb and the action is smoother than any other rifle I have owned. I would not hesitate to purchase the new Model 1873s.

I agree with Chip! If the Model 1873 (and all other levers i.e. 94, etc) were made in the U.S.A., I would glady pay a premium .... my great-grandfathers from the 1800's, and grandfathers through the 1900's (all Winchester toting men) are sure to be rolling over in their graves. ** RIP Winchester New Haven Conn.**

It is a shame that Winchester can't get an American Co to make an AMERICAN ICON, definately wouldn't spend the money to send it to Japan. Get it together Winchester, keep jobs in America, maybe less profits but employ Americans!

I am truly saddened to see yet another American icon made outside the U.S. I would happily spend $1500 IF this American company were making thier product HERE!

I was very excited to see the return of such an AMERICAN icon. I have a safe full of Winchesters, some have been handed down for generations. All are made in the U.S.A. You cant imagine my disappointment when I saw that yet another 'Iconic American Rifle' is actually a Japanese imposter! SHAME ON YOU, AGAIN, WINCHESTER!!!!

For 1580 dollars, I can get a Rossi .45 lever, a Rossi 357 lever, and a Rossi 30-30 lever. And they all work. But the Winchester is nice.
