Today was the opening day of turkey season this morning. I shot this tom with my 3 1/2 Winchester number 6 and I got it square in the head and neck. The bird went down flopped a bit the stopped and I went over to retrieve the bird and it got back up. It was like the 6's didn't do the job you can see the blood coming out every where I hit it. I've shot turkeys back in NY where I use to live and on shot was always down with the 3 1/2. Should I switch ammo to 5's or 4's?

Well written Jim, The most frustrating aspect of hunting the big bird happened to me last season. Misfire when you have a “sure shot” on a big one. Squeeze the trigger and “click”! Did I forget to chamber one? He didn’t even know I was there! Needless to say he “boogied” when I attempted to cycle another round. Come to find out, there was a round in the chamber “firing pin” detent typical to expended hulls. These were top of the line turkey loads, well it happens! Will not happen this year! I’ll be pointing a over and under this season, the second round will go “pronto” without noise or movement. Can’t wait for gobbler season this year.
